King David Hotel Faces
Invasion by U.S. Chains

JERUSALEM — The
King David Hotel, which
celebrates its 50th anniver-
sary this year, is facing a
major challenge for the role
of Jerusalem's pre-eminent
hotel from two American
chains, according to a story
in the New York Times.
In recent years the King
David has lost business to
the Jerusalem Hilton and
the problem is expected to
worsen with the May open-
ing of a new Sheraton across
the street from the historic
hotel. The King David is one
of five hotels owned by - the
Dan Hotel Corp., the largest
chain in Israel.
The challenge to Dan's
leadership is not limited to
' Jerusalem. In Haifa, where
the Dan Carmel is situated,
Hyatt is building a resort
spot and Hilton is consider-
ing one. In Tel Aviv, the
27-year-old Dan Hotel, for-
merly the premier inn
there, has lost its dominant
role to newer beachfront
palaces built by foreign
interests.
Changes at the King
David are under way and
Mickey Federman, manag-
ing director of the Dan
chain, hopes to make the
family-run business com-
petitive with the new high-
rise hotels. By its anniver-

Syrian Role
in Infiltration
by Terrorists?

Raider-Dennis Agency, 17117 W. Nine Mile, Suite 333, Southfield

PHONE 559-2250

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israeli security circles said
Monday that Syrian
authorities were deeply in-
volved in a terrorist attempt
to infiltrate Israel by gliders
last month to carry out
sabotage missions.
Details were supplied by
the two terrorists captured
after their glider crash-
landed in Israel — one a Sy-
rian and the other a Turk.
Under interrogation, the
terrorists indicated that the
Syrians spared no effort to
provide logistical assistance
for the mission. They estab-
lished a special base south
of Horns in southwestern
Syria, provided the ter-
rorists with gliding in-
structors from their own
commando units and placed
Syrian army technicians in
charge of maintaining the
gliders and balloons which
were also placed at the dis-
posal of the terrorists.
