"WE GET THE ROOTS"

Friedman said he had
been told that if the Bat
Mitzva ceremony was
held on Friday night or
Saturday morning, and if
the Bar Mitzva was cele-
brated on Saturday
morning, many Jewish
parents "would be forced
to take the reception to a
non-kosher facility be-
cause social and dancing
music, photography and
smoking are not permit-
ted on the Shabat" in his
synagogue and that this
would put "a restraint on
thetotal joy and partying
atmosphere of the occa-
sion."

RINCETON

For Young Men Eight to Eighty

In previous years, Rabbi
Jacob Friedman reported in
the bulletin of his Temple
Beth Torah in Ocean, Bnot
Mitzva were celebrated on
Friday nights and Bnai
Mitzva on Saturday morn-
ings.
He described what was
happening as "the creation
of a new tradition and the
breaking down of old tradi-
tions," adding he did not
know whether or not to be
disturbed by the change. He
said he did question the rea-
sons given him for the
scheduling change.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Moshe Levinger,
leader of the ultra-
nationalist Gush Emunim
movement in Israel, said
last week at the conclusion
of his 10-day visit to the
United States that he raised
"a substantial" amount of
money from American
Jewish supporters for his
movement.
He said he found "a great
deal of support" for Gush
Emunim's plans to increase
Jewish settlements in
Judaea and Samaria in
general, and in Hebron in
particular.

Culture Award

PARIS (JTA) — The
French Foundation for
Jewish Culture has
awarded its first .prize to
historian Leo Poliakov. The
award, a check for 50,000
francs ($10,000) was pre-
- sented on behalf of the jury
by Nobel Prize winner
Andre Lwoff.

The prize was established
at the initiative of several
prominent Jewish per-
sonalities. Poliakov was
born in Russia in 1910 and
is considered a world expert
on the history of anti-
Semitism and the
Holocaust.

Rebbe Honored

ALBANY, N.Y. (JTA) —
Gov. Hugh Carey has pro-
claimed "80 days of Educa-
tion," coinciding with the
start of the 80th year of
Rabbi Menahem Schneer-
son, the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
A similar resolution was
approved in the State As-
sembly.

of the Saturday afternoon/
evening Bar or Bat Mitzva
was that "many of the in-
vited guests were unable to
attend the religious serv-
ices" if the ceremony was
held on a Friday night or a
Saturday morning.
But, he declared, "What I
hear is that most families
requesting a Bar or Bat
Mitzva on a Saturday after-

noon or evening do not out of
real religious conviction but
mainly because of con-
venience."
