Capping 34 years of continuous service with the ZOA including an eight- year stint as director of the Michigan and Ohio Valley regions, Leikin was the re- cipient of ZOA's highest ci- tation, the Louis D. Bran- deis Award presented to him at ZOA's 82nd national convention in Washington, D.C. Leikin is a graduate of_ a Hebrew "Tarbut" High School in Mariampole, Lithuania, and the Col- lege of the City of New York. As a youth, he was a disciple of the Zionist leader, Ze'ev Jabotinsky and held leadership posi- tions in the Zionist Re- visionist movement and the Betar youth organiza- tion. In 1936, he left the U.S. for pre-state Israel where he served in Britain's Civil Service as an inspector in the department of agricul- ture. He was active in the Hagana and the Tel Aviv Special Constabulary, .a voluntary police force formed to protect the all- Jewish city against Arab marauders. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with military intelligence units in the Near East and Europe. Residents of Laguna Hills, Calif., the Masser- mans were honored by Temple Judea_ there on the occasion. Masserman preached the_ sermon and the couple hosted a kidush following the service. Their three- year-old grandson Mikey gave the blessing over the wine. Their son, Dr. Jay chanted the Haftorah. Mrs. Masserman received an aliya. Masserman, a former Detroit Times state and telegraph editor, is the brotherhood editor of the temple bulletin and handles publicity.
