THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Floats Are Planned for Independence Parade Preparations are continu- ing for the local celebration of Israel Independence Day on May 10, which will begin with a parade and continue with festivities at the Southfield Civic Center. According to Al Yost, chairman . of the parade committee, - Stuart Sandweiss of United Synagogue Youth, Floyd Glenn of Habonim, and Michelle White and Andy Berlinberg of Bnai Brith Youth have worked from the beginning to assure an exciting and impressive parade. The theme of the parade is "Israel — Past, Present and Future" and according to Sybil Mintz, Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel Moses' float will be titled, "Learning Through The Ages." The float will have paper mache characters representing Jewish educators from different periods in history. Another group which will be participating in the parade will be the students at Adat Shalom Synagogue. According to Bea Kretchman, _princi- pal of United Hebrew Schools branch at Adat Shalom, the UHS classes have adopted different Israeli cities and their participation in the parade will be based on the costumes indigenous to these cities. Parade prizes will be awarded on the basis of orig- inality, compliance with the theme and over-all excel- lence. More than 20 organ- izations representing adults as well as children have al- ready indicated that they will participate in the parade: Any individual or group interested in par- ticipating can call Al Yost, 851-5100. After the parade, accord- ing to Mira Eisenberg, pro- gram chairman, there will be greetings from political dignitaries followed by an original musical produc- tion, "Israel Alive and Sing- ing." Co-produced by E. Toby Lantz and Batia Kleinbort, the show will in- clude solos, choruses and dancing groups and will fea- ture both amateur and pro- fessional artists.
