society. He recalled visiting
Jerusalem 14 years ago,
finding a city with "physical
and spiritual scars."
"Today Jerusalem is a
smiling and friendly
city," he said. Greene
said he had met Arabs liv-
ing in Jerusalem, and
found out that they are
fearless, and speak
openly — thus imple-
menting their freedom of
the individual.
Greene told a crowded
news conference, "So much
has changed for the better,
it seems to me . . . I admire
tremendously the new
building that has been
going on. When new build-
ings go up in Europe they
nearly always destroy the
character of the-city. Your
new buildings enlarge the
character of the city and
don't destroy it. I also ad-
mire tremendously the
work on the walls and the
planting of trees.
"In 1967, I was aware of
the latent hostility, and
that seems to be lacking
now," he said.
Greene admitted that
Arab intellectuals re-
mained opposed to Israeli
sovereignty over the city,
but he said he had been
struck by the frankness
with which they spoke,
sometimes even criticizing
the PLO.
Greene confirmed that
he had been correspond-
ing with his old friend,
British spy Kim Philby,
now Hiring in Moscow.
They had discussed what
Philby had written about
Afghanistan and Iran,
but Greene thought that
most of it had been "dis-
information" (the Soviet
policy of presenting mis-
leading information for
political purposes).
The British author also
said he did not believe re-
cent disclosures about the
British Secret Service; with
which he had been con-
nected in the past.
He said all secret serv-
ices were prone to infiltra-
tion — the-CIA, the British
Secret Service and the Rus-
sian KGB. Asked if this in-
cluded the Israel Secret
Service, he replied, "I think
you have been very lucky
there, haven't you? In the
intelligence'world, the Mos-
sad has a very high reputa-
tion — Mossad- and the Vat-
ican both have very high
reputations," Greene said.
The Jerusalem Prize is
awarded once in two years,
to an author whose work
expresses the "liberty of
man in society." The last re-
cipient was Sir Isaiah Be-
rlin.
Some 100,000 visitors
are expected at the
Jerusalem Book Fair.
Forty-six countries are
participating, displaying
their books on 1,200
stands. Israeli publishers
alone occupy 120 stands.
In all, 350 publishers
world wide participate.
The Jerusalem. Book Fair
is the second largest after
the Frankfurt Fair. Al-
though it is primarily in-
tended for business transac-
tions, the afternoon hours
were open to the public at
large. Organizers of the
book fair said Monday that
beyond the professional
value of the fair, it contrib-
uted politically showing
that an event of an interna-
tional magnitude could take
place in Jerusalem nowa-
days.
All the countries which
maintain diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel — as well
as a number of countries
which don't—participate at
the fair.
No Egyptian publishers
showed up. Mayor Teddy
Kollek explained recently
that although no formal in-
vitations . were sent, in the
course of informal negotia-
tions the Egyptians said the
time was.not ripe for them
to show up at the fair.
Toby Holtzman of Detroit
is representing the Jewish
Publication Society of
America at the Book Fair.
He has included many vol-
umes on Jewish subjects,
published by Wayne State
University Press, in the
book exhibits.
