THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Photographer Is Released as an Anti-Nazi Defendant BONN (JTA) — Leon Shachman, one of 22 anti- Nazi activists on trial in Bad Hersfeld for alleged violent behavior, was cleared by the court. The judge concluded that it was impossible to establish who was responsible for the vio- lence that erupted at the Deutschland Meeting of the neo-Nazi National Demo- DESIGN-IT Residential & Commercial Graphic Wall Design KEITH SCHARE Interior Designer (313) 543-0203 I i f 41faiz cratic Party (NPD) in Philippsthal last June 17. The charges against Shachman, an Israeli photographer, and the others were pressed by the NPD. They alleged Shachman, who has been covering neo-Nazi activities in West Germany for the past years, attacked NPD members. Shachman said he was severely beaten by the neo-Nazis without pro- vocation and had only tried to defend himself. The prosecution had charged him with intimi- dation and breach of the peace and asked for a six-month suspended sentence. The trial of the other de- fendants continued as their sympathizers demonstrated outside the courthouse to protest the proceedings. Anti-Nazis said it was un- conscionable that the Hes- sen State Prosecutor ac- cepts without question the NPD's version of events. If you can't help, at least make a sound of sympathy. p c7qn_ c- . Friday, April 10, 1981 51 Haig Talks in Israel 'Highly Productive JERUSALEM (JTA) — Secretary of State Alexan- der Haig conferred with Premier Menahem Begin, Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir and other top offi- cials on Sunday. On his departure from Jerusalem, Haig said his talks in Israel were "highly productive." Begin said agreements were reached on a number of major points but would not disclose what they were. Haig, who met with President Anwar Sadat in Cairo on Saturday and vis- ited Jordan and Saudi Arabia this week, made it clear from the outset of his Middle East junket that the U.S. is concerned chiefly with the threat of Soviet in- terventionism in the region. When he arrived in Israel, he told reporters at Ben- Gurion Airport that "the purpose of my trip is how to meet the threat posed by the Soviet Union and its surro- gates in the area" and to "exchange views on how to further the peace process in the area." In his discussions with Begin and other officials, he underscored the Re- agan Administration's "full commitment" to the Camp David framework and the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. Part of his talks was devoted to American efforts to create a multi-national peacekeeping force to police Sinai after Israel completes its withdrawal in April 1982. He repor- tedly indicated that he had grounds to hope that obstacles to the creation of the multi-national force soon would be overcome. In his talks with Haig, Begin reportedly objected vehemently to the Reagan Administration plans to provide Saudi Arabia with extra equipment to improve the combat capability of the 62 F-15 jet fighters the Saudis have purchased from the U.S. and especially, the decision confirmed in Wash- ington last Friday, to pro- vide the Saudis with sophis- ticated AWACS surveil- lance aircraft. Sources said Haig showed no great enthusiasm when pressed by the Israelis to reactivate the stalled negotiations with Egypt over autonomy for the Arabs on the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He indi- cated that it was his in- tention on this trip to try Petition Backs Prisoners of Zion TEL AVIV (JNI) — The Association of Former Pris- oners of Zion, whose mem- bers served an aggregate of 6,000 years in Soviet pris- ons, are circulating a peti- tion demanding total lin- kage between U.S. trade and other negotiations with the USSR and the freeing of all Soviet Jews who wish to come to Israel. Prime Minister Menahem Begin was the first person to sign the peti- tion at a Knesset ceiemony. The petition will be bound in a book entitled "Six Thousand Years of Human Life Wasted for No Reason in Soviet Prisons."
