The organization's com- mander, Iosif Ayzin, says the group wants to become better acquainted with the American way of life and become more affiliated with the Jewish community. He said the group hopes to be- come affiliated in some way with the Jewish War Vete- rans. Ayzin says the group has 50 members, including five women. Twenty-six are in- valids. • "All of them have documents issued by the Russian armed forces with statements contain- ing their participation, locations of battle, casualties, and medals for bravery," Ayzin said in Russian. "We are conducting pro- grams designed to get ac- quainted with our Novi Svet (New World), and instill more pride in Jewishness. Ninety percent of our vete- rans know Yiddish and so we are conducting our meet- ings in Russian and Yid- dish. In spite of the avail- able English courses our members are having a hard time learning the language. You see, our youngest members are in their 50s, many in their 60s and some in their 70s. "I feel a deep commitment for this organization. In Russia we were not Rus- sians and not Jews. We were nothing. Here we want to find our identity and be proud.
