was co-sponsored by Rep.
William Broomfield (D-
Mich.), read in part:
"Whereas the Congress
recognizes that an under-
standing of the heritage of
all American ethnic groups
contributes to the unity of
our country and, whereas
intergroup understanding
can be fostered through an
appreciation of the culture,
history and traditions of the
Jewish community and the
contributions of Jews to our
country and society .. .
"Be it resolved by the
Senate and the House of
Representatives of the
United States of America
. .. that the President is
authorized and re-
quested to issue a proc-
lamation designating
May 3 through May 10,
1981 as Jewish Heritage
Week."
The significance of the
May date for observance,
according to Rep. Broom-
field, "lies in the fact that
this period falls close to
dates which are important
not only to Jews
everywhere, but to all of us
in the United States —
Passover, the anniversary
of the Warsaw Ghetto Up-
rising, Israeli Independence
Day, Jerusalem Day and
Solidarity Day."

-2 Jets for Arkia
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Arkia Israel Inland- Airline
has purchased two Boeing
- 737 Aircraft for use on char-
ter flights between Europe
and Eilat.
The $31.5 million deal is
being financed through pri-
vate bank loans. The first
plane under the new order,
taking up an option from a
year ago, is due for delivery
in June 1982 and the second
plane three months later.
The Boeing company has,
meanwhile, offered to help
Arkia buy or lease a used
Boeing 737 to enable the
airline to begin its Euro-
pean charters within three
months. The new planes are
the first jets in the local air-
line's fleet, which has so far
consisted of propeller and
jet-prop planes.
