The Colonel gathered up his men He pointed to the hills above; That is our target on the morrow, men 'Tis well encased, impregnable 'Tis well fortified, thick mortar walls Well gunned Land mines are everywhere. The-bodies here — they looked so young Turn bullet ridden, clotted blood Barbed wire shredding flesh. Blood spattered everywhere Whole bodies struck in two. No words I know can tell for sure The carnage that was here The men so young — chadder boys Their youth upon their face We walked around the two of us Each. in his own path And then we net once more As if by magic magnet drawn - He looked out at each young face "It must be done, the stakes are high" He paused in his reflective mind. "Morning prayers at 6 A.M. sharp Form in small minyan groups Sleep well, my brothers, sleep well To-Morrow We go for Israel. We walked amid the Golan Heights My wife and I Both soldiers of another time In my mind's eye I saws it-all The story here was told The wreckage here was left intact For all the world to see Broken, crippled tanks in awkward stance Half tracks, gun carriers, Parts missing smashed, grotesque, Lying in the ditches. Counter parts of the fallen men Left Just where they fell Ammunition boxes, torn asunder Russian writing on the sides What were they doing here? Pure grief is such :a private thing Only we (Israelis) would know It cannot be shared, no matter what As our history has taught us so A youth — so young — his body lay Across our bloody path His hands stretched to heaven above His open eyes stared up to God His mouth was pursed — I thought As ifto say "Sh'MA - - -" Matted blood hung on his face . That face that held us tight So young — so sweet — so innocent He seemed What violence was this Upon this youth so bright My soul shrieked out in loud protest My body boiled with pain Against these deaths of boys So young who fought so brave For a land they love so much His breast was bare - His "tzitzes" ripped to shreds The four corners of his world Were gone His pack was split in two It lay open turn upon the ground A Yarmulke, a 'prayer' shawl and book Tefilin trailing back This his daily bread he carried everywhere No-matter where he went It was a part of him And now upon a foreign land he lay Even here lie the Israeli dead. n n draperies w y u o r ue' x r s t mg r o v i n y room. g • • • • • • • _0_0 • • , DRAPERY CLEANERS 47 grieves, his intellect deter- iorates, his heart is in tur- moil. I looked down again and saw his name Upon the tags he wore I was but one, the rest Lay buried in the mud The name spelled out "Moshe I looked. again It was my name That he had died for me. One yesterday he lived Loved and was loved A child upon his knee But now he lives upon the hill A warrior thru and thru He never reckoned with the price That he had paid in full He only knew — in words so true That Israel shall be free Somewhere in time — a father's time Bent over, turn in grief Will raise his eyes unto the Lord And pray For a son he loved so well A mother's heart will burst apart For the love she bore for him A wife will die a thousand times But proud her heart will be For her gallant who gave his life That Israel shall stay free Upon the morrow — The battle won They will look upon the battlefield In. full report, so meaningless The statistics will coldly say "Moshe — killed in action" _A statistic Perhaps to them it may be true But certainly Not to me! Historical Background On June 9, 1967 the Israeli civilian army attacked the Golan Heights (Syria) at 1530. The objective, the fortress Tel Fahar built to withstand the heaviest bombing, all approaches were mined, with barbed wire entanglements everywhere. The fort was considered impregnable. With less than 200 men the attack began. The tanks could only go so far. The main fighting was done by the foot soldiers crawling from rock to rock on their bellies. The two commanders Major Alex Krinsky and Colonel Moshe Klein were killed 1 hour after the attack started. The company was then in charge of 2nd Lieutenants with no higher chain of command. The fort was captured just, before dark. The Syrian army collapsed, the war on the northern front was over. The price (A fearful price) ' 37 dead, 82 wounded They had literally paid in blood. Note: This is the only time I know of when a 2nd Lieutenant outranked a Captain after we were married in the army. It has been so ever since. Credits: Swift Sword — By Brig. General S.L.A.
