Envoy Criticizes Anti-Semitic Tract in Romania

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Ambassador Nicolai
lonescu of Romania has in-
formed the World Jewish
Congress (WJC) that his
government categorically
repudiates and condemns
an anti-Semitic tract that
has appeared in Bucharest
and that appropriate meas-
ures have been taken to halt
its circulation in Romania.
The envoy made that
clear to Rabbi Arthur
Schneier, chairman of the
WJC American Section,
who had wiled his attention
to the booklet defaming
Jews and expressed con-
cern. Schneier had re-
quested the strongest gov-
ernment intervention to
halt dissemination of the
material. Among other
things, it accuses Romanian
Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen of
being an agent of a univer-
sal Jewish cabal.
Ionescu explained to
Schneier that the publica-
tion was neither inspired
nor sanctioned by the
Romanian authorities and
in fact was not printed in
Romania but illegally in-
troduced from another

Israel's Poor'
Are Increasing

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The percentage of Israeli
families living below the
poverty line has risen sub-
stantially during the past
four years, according to a
study by National Insur-
ance Institute (NIT)
economists.
The rise is especially pro-
nounced among families
with large numbers of chil-
dren. One of the conclusions
drawn by the NIT resear-
chers is that child conclu-
sions drawn by the NIT re-
searchers is that child
allowances paid to the
families have not kept pace
with inflation.
In 1977, 2.8 percent of
families were adjudged
below the poverty line. In
1978 the figure was 3.3 per-
cent and in 1979 it was 3.8
percent.

country. He noted that
there are many organiza-
tions outside Romania,
most of them fascist or ir-
redentist, that cling to the
condemned attitudes of the

Nazi era and try to impair
good relations between the
U.S. and Romania. He said
the Romanian ‘authorities
will not allow this poison to
be spread.
