JWV Corrects
Dreyfus Author

NEW YORK — In a letter
to the Toronto Globe and
Mail, Irvin Steinberg, na-
tional commander of the
Jewish War Veterans of the
USA, protested statements
made by author Mavis Gal-
lant concerning Jews in the
American military during
the 19th Century.
In an interview, pub-
lished Feb. 28 on Ms. Gal-
lant's new book on the
Dreyfus scandal, inter-
viewer Phyllis Grosskuth
raised the issue of Dreyfus'
unique position as a Jew in
the French army.
Ms. Gallant countered,
"There were, 500 Jews out of
an army corps of 10,000.
That's high . . . for a tiny
Jewish population." But she
continued, "There were no
Jews in the British army,
none in the American."
In his letter, Steinberg
said at the time Dreyfus
was being unjustly ac-
cused in Fraice, 5,000
Jews were serving , the
.U.S. army in the
Spanish-American War
according to a survey by
the American Jewish
`listorical Society.
One index to the number
of Jews who served was the
4,000 furloughs for the High
Holy Days granted by the
War Department in 1898.
Another is the special trib-
ute paid by Theodore
Roosevelt to the Jews serv-
ing in his Rough Riders.
Another is the number of
medals Jews won for brav-
ery.
