THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Rebirth and
Homecoming
ek„
Throughout Jewish history, our People has known the
pain of departure, of homeless wandering, of being strangers
in lands where we wanted desperately to be "at home".
Pesach and the retelling of the Exodus from Egypt
remind us of that special sadness which has been part of our
historical experience.
But Passover also reminds us that after every Exodus we
have undergone a rebirth. So it is with the Jews who have
recently come to us from the Soviet Union — a contemporary
exodus which touches our communal life in Detroit.
In search of freedom, they risk everything to leave.
Whether they choose Israel or America, their exodus
becomes our own.-It is as though, as the Hagada tells us, we
took the journey ourselves.
Many have found haven in our community, where we are
blessed with a long memory and where the assistance given
to our parents'-generation is repeated in our own time.
While continuing their support of our aged, our youth,
our troubled and our handicapped at home and overseas
(growing needs intensified by recession and inflation), the
Jewish Welfare Federation and its local agencies are working
valiantly to care for our newcomers.
Our institutions cannot do it alone, however. They need
the money to continue vital programs of resettlement here
and in Israel. They also require the personal commitment of
time and dedication that each of us is duty-bound to make
toward the cultural and spiritual absorption of these
Russian Jews.
Therefore, we, the Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, call
upon the members of our congregations and upon-every Jew,
to make his or her best contribution to the 1981 Allied
Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.
And, further, we urge every Jewish household to reach
out to our newcomers to help them become one with us. By
opening our homes and our hearts to them at Passover in the
true spirit of community, we will show that we remember our
past and that we have learned its lessons. We will create a
new rebirth and a new homecoming. We will let no Jew
remain a stranger among us.
