'Mr. Maccabi' Will be Missed

ponenet for the Macca-
bean cause.
In 1963 the American
contingent which comprised
the U.S. Committee Sports
For Israel felt that the for-
mation of an International
Maccabia Games Commit-
tee was necessary. Gildes-
game was very much in
favor of this idea and it was
decided that we would have
a meeting in London per-
taining to the ar-
rangements concerning a
permanent committee
which would determine the
posture of the quadren-
nially held Jewish Olympic
Games." We met in London
and representatives, as I re-
call it, came from the U.S.,
Canada, South Africa,
Great Britain and Israel.
There was also a represen-
tative there from Italy.
We moved along
smoothly until we came into
an area which had long been
a sore spot for sportsmen in
Israel. We got involved in
the ongoing battle between
the working men group of
sportsmen, called the
Hapoel, and the Maccabi
sportsmen who were
aligned with the General
Zionists.
Gildesgame seemed to
feel that we should continue

rael, strictly under the

The Jewish .sports world
last month suffered a tragic
loss in the sudden death of
Pierre Gildesgame, com-
monly referred to as "Mr.
Maccabi" all over the world,
when he was struck down by
a hit-and-run driver in Lon-
don.
' Gildesgame was the Mac-
cabia Games. That's putting
it in a nutshell. A very suc-
cessful businessman in
London and in other areas of
the world in partnership
with his older brother,
Leon, who resides in Mt.
Kisco, N.Y., Gildesgame as
a youth, together with Leon,
walked from Poland to
Palestine.
He stayed in the Holy
Land for a few years, ac-
quired a perfect speaking
knowledge of Hebrew and
then made his way to Bel-
gium where untimately he
received a degree in
engineering. From Belgium
he wended his way to Lon-
don and got into the man-
ufacturing and sale of
sweaters and apparel.
Gildesgame joined a
Maccabi unit and became
quite active in the
equestrian field. From
the competitive side he
went, eventually, to the
administrative side and
worked his way up in the
ranks of the European Raishit Guela

population of 5,000 Ameri-

jurisdiction and aegis of the
Maccabi fold. I, as the
youngest member of the
three delegates from the
United States, but perhaps
the one with the most
hutzpa, firmly opposed this
alignment.

It was finally decided
that we would await the
arrival of the Deputy
Mayor of Ramat Gan, one
Shalom Zysman who was
on the way from Israel.
When Zysman arrived he
listened to the verbal
battle that was taking
place between Gildes-
game and myself and fi-
nally decided to include
the Hapoel contingent
into the IMGC and the
matter was dropped from
further discussion. How-
ever, Gildesgame was
still very upset.
Fortunately we had ar-
ranged for a black-tie clos-
ing dinner ceremony at
which I, as one of the three
American delegates, was
asked to sit on the dias
where Gildesgame and I
patched up our differences.

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
One of every three Israeli
homes now obtains hot
water from roof-top solar
heaters. By the year 2000,
10 percent of Israel's energy
is expected to be provided by
solar power.

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Maj. Gen. (Res.) Binyamin

the Israel Air Force, said
this week on Israel radio
that the advance warning

U.S. intends to sell Saudi

radar stations, but the IAF
could easily shoot them
down if necessary.
