Glasberg, Israel Friend Beinesh Epstein, 85 NEW YORK — Isaiah Trunk, 75, chief archivist of YIVO, the Jewish Research Institute, died March 25. He was one of the lead- ing histo- rians in the United States on the Trunk destruction of European Jewry during the Nazi /era. In 1973, he was co-winner of the Na- tional Book Award in his- tory for "Judenrat: The Jewish Councils in Eastern Eur9pe Under Nazi Occupa- tion. ' Mr. Trunk was the son of the "Kutne Rebbe," and earned a master's degree at Warsaw University. When Germany occupied Poland in 1939 he fled to Russia, returning to Poland after the war. Mr. Trunk lived at Kibutz Lochamei Hagetaot in Is- rael for three years and then moved to Canada. He joined YIVO in New York in 1971. He had been associated with the historians' circle of YIVO in Warsaw before World War II. father became a leading rabbi in St. Louis and later in Cleveland. Epstein became a teacher, wrote for Yiddish newspapers and for a time broadcast a prggram of commentary on WEVD, the radio station owned by the Jewish Daily Forward. Sadie Freidman, Philanthropist NEW YORK (JTA) — Philanthropist Sadie Friedman died March 28 in Boca Raton, Fla. at age 84. She and her late husband, Max Friedman, provided funds for the Albert Eins- tein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York City and for the uni- versity's Research Insti- tute. Israeli Poetess Amir-Pinkerfeld TEL AVIV (JTA) — Anda Amir-Pinkerfeld, poet and writer of children's poems and stories, died March 24 at age 79. She was born in Poland in. 1902 and came to Israel in 1920, returning to Europe and then coming back to Israel in 1930. At the end of World War II she returned to Europe to work with children who had survived the Holocaust. She was awarded the Is- rael Prize for literature in 1978 for her 50-year contri- bution to Israeli culture. PARIS (JTA) — One of Is- rael's staunchest friends in France, Father Alexandre Glasberg, a Jewish-born Catholic priest, died March 25 at age 78. Fr. Glasberg, a Catholic convert in early childhood, openly affirmed his Jewish identity after the Nazi oc- cupation of France. He re-, fused to enter a monastery or leave the country to avoid arrest and wore the Nazi- imposed yellow. Star of David in public. Fr. Glasberg joined the French resistance move- ment in 1941 and two years later was appointed chief Catholic chaplain by th - Free French forces. In recent years Fr. Glas- berg was criticized by Jewish circles after he pri- vately advocated the crea- tion of a Palestinian state.
