ELIZABETH HOLTZMAN came a mayoral assistant to then New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay and acted as liaison be- tween the mayor's office and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Miss Holtzman achieved national political fame when, in June 1972 she de- feated 50-year incumbent Democrat Emanuel Celler in the race for the New York 16th Congressional District seat in the United States House of Representatives. Thus, she became, at 31, the youngest woman ever elected to the House. During her four terms in Washington, Miss Holtzman wrote legislation on issues pertaining to the extension of the deadline for ratification of the ERA, de- portation of Nazi war crim- inals from the U.S., lower- ing property insurance rates for the victims of red- lining and making cigarette bootlegging and child por- nography federal crimes. Ix. 1976, she uncovered a fraud concerning a free summer food program for children in New York which led to the conviction of offi- cials and a more effective program. Miss Holtzman served as a member of the Judiciary Committee and participated in the com- mittee's deliberations on the impeachment of former President Richard M. Nixon and actively questioned former President Gerald Ford about the Nixon pardon. She was chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigra- tion, Refugees and Interna- tional Law, served on the House Budget Committee, chaired the Committee's Task Force on State and Local Government and also was a member of the Select Committee on Aging in 1979. Former Congresswoman Holtzman helped found and co-chaired the first Con- gresswoman's Caucus in 1977. In March, of that same year she was selected as one of the two House members to serve on the President's National Com- mission on the Observance of International Woman's Year. NEW YORK — Under prodding by the American Jewish Congress, the U.S. Air Force has declared in an official policy statement that it does not discriminate against officers of any re- ligion in considering promo- tions in its chaplain's corps. The Air Force statement was prompted by com- plaints by the Congress that Colonel Jack Sable of New York had been denied a promotion to brigadier gen- eral in the Air Force Re- serve because he is Jewish.
