PASSOVER, ITS LAWS AND Cl

If one is going abroad or in cast of
emergency when the Chometz can not be
sold consult a competent Rabbi.
Please fill out the attached form and
give it to a competent Rabbi or mail it to
our office and we Will provide the service
of selling the Chometz.
PREPARING THE HOME
A thorough house cleaning is under-
taken in preparation for the Passover
holiday.
In addition to the entire house, the fol-
lowing places should be checked to en-
sure they are free from Chometz:
Office, car, pockets,. of clothing
(especially children's), pocket hooks etc.
Also vacuum-cleaner bags should be
discarded or cleaned and stored with the
Chometz.
Pet foods usually contain Chometz.
Consult a competent Rabbi as to which
foods can he used.
BEDIKAS CHOMETZ —
SEARCH FOR THE CHOMETZ
Since we are not permitted on Friday
night to use the necessary candle for the
search for Chometz, the search must
take place on Thursday night, April 16;
1981.

On Passover we celebrate the libera-
tion of the Jewish -people from Egyptian
slavery and at the same time the libera-
tion from, and the negation of, the art
cient Egyptian system and Way of life the
- abominations of Egypt - . Thus we
celebrate our physical liberation together
with our spiritual freedom.
The Torah laws concerning Passover,
besides being G-dly commands, help us
in experiencing this spiritual freedom of
Passover. Unique to Passover is the
eating of Matzoh* and the stringent
prohibition of eating Chometz, as well as
the possession of Chometz: Thus we
have to prepare the home by ridding it of
all Chometz.

WHAT IS CHOMETZ?
Chometz is a general term for all
leavened foods forbidden on Passover.
Foods and drinks made from wheat, Oats,
rye, spelt, barley, and derivatives of same
are subject to the laws of Chometz. The
prohibition includes, as well, the taste of
Chometz absorbed in food, utensils or
dishes. The slightest trace of Chometz
can convert the entire product into
Chometz.

R

• Don't forget to sell your Chometz before Passover,
no later than Friday, April 17, 1981 before 10:55 a.m.
(For more information, contact a competent Rabbi.),
• Passover does not end until after nightfall of the 8th
day, Sunday, April 26, 1981. All the laws of Passover
are binding until that time. Therefore, absolute care
should be taken NOT to buy bread or any articles of
Chometz until the holiday is entirely over. One should
be careful not to buy bread or any other Chometz
even after Passover, that was baked or prepared
during Passover, because it is forbidden to use any
Chometz that was owned by a Jew during Passover,
EVEN AFTER PASSOVER.
• Make sure to have hand-made Shmura Matzoh at
least for the Seder. Each person at the. -Seder should
eat at least a Kazayis of Matzoh (approximately one
oz.), as well as drink the four cups of wine, and eat the
bitter herbs. Each cup of wine should hold at least 3 1/2
ounces, and the bitter herbs eaten should be at least
5/7 of an ounce. In addition to the Kazayis of Matzoh
that one eats after making the blessing over the Mat-
zoh, an additional 1/3 of an ounce of Matzoh must be

eaten for the korech (sandwich) as well as for the
Afikomen. (One who is ill may drink four cups of grape

The legal intricacies covering this
transfer of property are many and only a
competent Rabbi should be entrusted
with its execution.

*Note: Matzoh used all year round is not
for Passover use. Only Matzoh
especially baked for Passover may he
used on Passover. (Healthy persons
should ref rain from eating egg matzoh
during the holiday of Passover.)
