iThe Best of Everything

ENTREES THAT let a
person eat all they want ..
without worry . . . This is
what Marty Benson, phar-
macist with Grove Drugs on
Fort St. in Wyandotte, has
brought to the northwest
area . . . It's a Slimmery line
he got into because so many
customers and friends had
health problems (diabetes,
hypoglycemia, etc.) . . . and
couldn't even enjoy their
own birthday cakes: -
He thought that some-
where there was a chef who
could work with him on this
situation— . and began a
search with wife Sandy ..
They discovered this chef .
during a layover in St. Louis
. . . He was doing it only for
the St. Louis area . . . and
Marty talked him into fran-
chising everything for
Michigan . . . This was two
years ago . . . The food is
now sent to a laboratory and
tested on a regular basis.
Only place that has the
Slimmery entrees around
here is Ram's Horn on 12
Mile east of Northwestern
. . . which has become a very
popular dining spot for
weight watching folks as
well as regular diners.
The new 24-hour oper-
ation owned by Jack
Maston and Tom Panto-
leon is clean as a whistle
... pleasantly decorated
... not gaudy like the
former Egg Castle and
Southfield House ...
Jack and Tom have done
a thorough renovation
job with gratifying re-
sults.
Bill Harrington is day
manager ... and John Pan-
toleon night manager.
I went to Ram's Horn and
tasted five of Marty's Slim-
mery dishes . . . at which
people will drool and yet be
able to have without fear of
gaining weight.
Chicken Creole (4 oz.
breast of chicken with skin
and . fat removed, tomato
puree and vegetables) .. .
Spinach Quiche (1 oz.
spinach, 4 oz. skim milk, 1
oz. cheese, 1 egg) . . . Pizza
• Roll (2 oz. cheese, 1/2 tsp.
margarine, vegetables,
wrapped in 1 slice of bread)
... . Cheese Tortilla- (2 slices
of bread, 2 oz. cheese, 1/2 cup
tomato puree) . . . Chili
Spaghetti Con Carne (% cup
of spaghetti, 2 oz. beef, 3 oz.
legumes, 34 cup of vegeta-
bles).
There wasn't the
slightest bitterness ... all
were equally delicious .. .
with the same consis-
tency and taste as their
regular counterparts.
Marty actually has 15
Slimmery entrees .....Ram's
Horn on 12 Mile east of
Northwestern is trying five
of them . . . However, by the
looks of things, it won't be
long before Jack and Tom
will be carrying a lot more of
the entrees . . . that's really
how good they are.
HENNY YOUNGMAN,
while at db's Club in Hyatt
Regency, said he's now
found a replacement for the
London Chop House
whenever in Detroit.

Friday, April 3, 1981

Julian Ungar brought
Henny to John Laffrey's
Vineyards on Northwestern
and Franklin ... and he
came back two times after
... shooting one-liners at
people downstairs in John's
Steak Bar.
On stage at db's, Henny
was John Laffrey's biggest
promoter.
IT'S OKAY TO pick your
teeth at the Bread Basket
Deli in Lincoln Center ...
That is, if you use one of
their specially designed
plastic toothpicks recom-
mended by dentists-. . . Ask
for one ... They come in a
little plastic case . . . and are
free.
THERE'S A NEW
ballgame in town ... . or
rather the second half of a
restaurant doubleheader.
It's now at Red Cedars on
Telegraph and Nine Mile
Rd. . . . owned by Jack Freed
and Ray Bresler.
People who don't want to
eat a lot . . . or are coming
from the theater . . . or
wherever . . . can now get a
second menu . . . from 5 p.m.
til midnight .. with chili,
potato skins, five different
1 /2 lb. hamburgers, from the
regular to open face - with
chili and chopped onion .. .
stuffed mushrooms, garlic
bread, sandwiches like
baked Reuben, French Dip
or open face prime rib on rye
. . . Julienne and Greek
salads, fried onion rings,
etc.
All this among the ele-
gant red and brown sur-
roundings of intimacy for
which Red Cedars has
been noted.
Many of the things
served, like garlic -bread,
potato skins, stuffed mush-
rooms, Julienne Salad, etc.
serve two people at the
same, regular one-person
price.
