Actress Recounts Visit With Sadat at Miami Benefit

MIAMI — At a federation
luncheon - in Miami Beach,
actress Elizabeth Taylor-
Warner told the audience —
each of whom had contrib-
uted a minimum of $10,000
to the 1981 combined
Jewish Appeal-Israel
Emergency Fund — of her
1978 Cairo visit with

"When I arrived, there was
no fanfare. Everything was
quiet. But Mrs. Sadat called
and invited me to lunch at
the Palace. I met all her
children and I thought 'This
is nice, but I'll never get the
chance to meet the great
man himself.'
"Then, the phone rang
and the message was that I
was to come. So, I drove for
about two hours to the
banks of the Suez Canal.
And there, under a group of
trees, was a very frail, slight
figure. My driver nudged
me. I was struck. I couldn't
move. Then Sadat stood up
and walked toward me. He
outstretched his arms and
said, 'My queen.'
"Now that," the actress
said, "is class."

Egypt's President Anwar
Sadat.
"I was excited about going
and I was afraid to go," said
Mrs. Warner, whose films
had been banned in Egypt
since she had converted to
Judaism. (The ban was
lifted by Sadat following his
1977 trip to Jerusalem.
