TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Eliahu Ben-Elissar, Israel's
first ambassador to Egypt,
returned home last week
after resigning his post in
order to run in the Knesset
elections.
Under Israel's election
law, would-be candidates
serving in civil service,
army or police posts must
resign at least 100 days be-
fore the poll. With elections
to take place on June 30, the
100-day countdown began
on Sunday.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Ida
Milgrom,
Anatoly
Shcharansky's mother, has
sent an open letter to Soviet
President Leonid Brezhnev
calling for the "establish-
ment of a committee to
rightfully and truthfully
clarify all violations of law
during Anatoly's case."
The text,,obtained by the
Student Struggle for
Soviet Jewry and Union of
Councils for Soviet Jews,
further stated that "not for
one moment will I forget
that my son is simply the
victim of a political game
which has endangered his
life."
Coinciding with the com-
pletion of four years of
Shcharansky's 13-year sen-
tence, the statement char-
acterized the sentence as
"unlawful, inhumane and
barbaric." Mrs. Milgrom
has also said that Anatoly
has been confined to an
internal prison with in the
camp, that all visits for 1981
have been cancelled and
that the majority of her let-
ters to him have been con-
fiscated.

BGU Scientists
Fight Coeliac

BEERSHEBA — Two sci-
entists at Ben-Gurion Uni-
versity have developed a
formula for gluten-free
products so that Israelis
with Coeliac (a disease that
causes an intolerance for
gluten) can enjoy a balanced
diet.
Prof. Avinoam Livne and
Prof. Moshe Trop worked for
three months to develop a
wheat substitute (gluten is
found in wheat flour) to be
used in cake, bread, bagels
and noodles. The two „are
now working on a low-
protein, low-sodium bread
for kidney and high blood
pressure patients.
