Michigan manager of El Al
Israel Airlines, gave cheer-
ing reports on the antici-
pated tourist growth for
1981.
Akiva Sharon, Chicago
district mamager for El Al,
spearheaded the optimistic
declaration with assurances
that tourism in Israel will
be spurred by the lower
rates to be provided by the
charter flights to commence
soon from Chicago, with a
brief stopover in Boston
and the non-stop flight to
Tel Aviv the only ones
available in the entire in-
dustry.
Michigan manager
Spector supplemented
this expression of op-
timism by indicating that
interest in these flights is
already being shown in

SIMON COOPER
this state. He said that the
growth of tourism has
been steady here and re-
mains a major devotion
by a large segment of
Michigan Jewry.
A vast increase in
tourism is foreseen by
Simon Cooper, manager of
the Dan Hotels chain, who
has the unique role of being
the only non-Jewish man-
ager in the industry in Is-
rael.
Cooper
spoke
enthusiastically about the
response to Israel's many
tourist attractions by Chris-
tians as well as Jews. He
pointed out that on an in-
ternational basis a majority
of tourists to Israel are
Christians, due to the large
groups traveling to the Holy
Land from European coun-
tries. The percentage of
Christians touring Israel
from the United States is a
bit lower than half but is
growing. He said that many
church groups visiting Is-
rael numbered from 400 to
500.
Cooper' who emphasized
the inspiration derived in
behalf of Israel from Chris-
tian participation in the
tourist experiences, is a
33-year-old Briton.
He began his career as
a yacht manager of the
Lord Jim in the Carib-
bean. In 1976, he took
over Canadian Pacific's
Jerusalem Plaza after
running CP's Chateau
Champlain in Montreal.
He feels that heading Is-
rael's largest hotel chain
will be a challenge because
the market in Israel is a
changing one. That chang-
ing market will require
greater cost-conscious
management in Israel
where traditionally high
room turnover and low
labor costs have made this
area less important. He
foresees the day when all Is-
raeli hotels will be managed
as tightly as the interna-
tional ones. He aims to
make the Dan Hotels a
leader in this area.
Chaim Ariel, a leader
among Israel hotel repre-
sentatives, said that the
current year is certain to set
a high record in tourism be-
cause of the many conven-
tions planned by Conserva- .
tive and Reform Jewish
religious organizations,
professional groups and the
United Jewish Appeal as
well as the Israel Bond
leadership.
Special attention is being
given the assembly of
Holocaust survivors and
their families, set for early
June, and the July Mac-
cabia games.
The uniqueness of the
magnetism attested to in
Israel tourism is also
shown, the leaders in the
industry stated, by the
large groups traveling
from such distant places
as South Africa and from
many unexpected areas.
Exemplary was the tour
of some 190 who came to
Israel from Uganda, by
way of Turkey. "It was a
reminder of what hap-
pened at Entebbe," ac-
cording to Leslie Adler,
general manager of Basel
Hotels in Israel.
The 150 tourist mana-
gers, including 30 percent of
new supervisors, who
attended the Tourist Show,
were addressed also by Uzi
Michaeli, North American
commissioner for the Israel
Government Tourism Ad-
ministration, and Amnon
Lynn of the Israel Govern-
ment Tourist Bureau in
Chicago.
