Arad served in the Israel Defense Forces from 1953 to 1956, attaining the rank of captain. He was on active duty in the 1956 Sinai Campaign and the Six-Day War. of 1967. Arad's government career began in 1962, when he joined the Minis- try for Foreign Affairs' department of interna- tional cooperation. Two years later he was named spokesman and director of the office of the Minis- try of Justice. In 1968, Arad was ap- pointed press counselor at the Israel Embassy in Lon- don. Posts held by Arad in the United States include depty consul general in charge of political affairs for the Consulate General of Is- rael (New York City) and minister-counselor in charge of information at the Israel Embassy (Washing- ton, D.C.).
