Quality Kosher Catering TEL AVIV — The elec- tion campaigns are being strongly felt in Israel in ad- vance of the April 7 Histad- rut elections and the June 30 Knesset elections. The new Finance Minis- ter Yoram Aridor slashed taxes on consumer goods like color TVs, radios, stereos, washing machines, sewing machines, auto- mobiles, cosmetics, etc. Within a short time 8,000 cars and 60,000 TV sets were sold. The merchants could not cope with the mas- sive demands. Some hired special planes to fly in more merchandise from abroad. The Finance Minister also decreased taxes for workers who work over- time. But prices for some basic foodstuff like chic- ken, eggs and meat, as well as gasoline, water, electricity, bus and taxi fares were raised. In spite of that, the` population accepted the changes with satisfaction, though the opposition Labor Party was highly critical and defined the changes as "election presents." The Likud rejected this accusation, claiming that the Labor Party also dis- tributed "election pre- sents" in the months be- fore elections when it was in power. The treasury based its calcula- tions on the February con- sumer price index, which rose by a relatively moder- ate 5.5 percent. The February index reached 164.8 points, using a baseline of 100 points for the average of prices in 1980. The CPI rose by 13.2 percent in the first two months of the year. Income tax brackets, tax credit points, and child allowances will be simultaneously ad- justed upwards by 24 per- cent. Taking these adjust- ments into account, the treasury calculates that the average net salary will rise by 20 to 25 percent, not in- cluding any additional in- creases which the Histadrut still might demand. The recent price re- ductions on consumer goods instituted by Finance Minister Yoram Aridor brought about a drop of 0.1 percent in the CPI, while government price increases caused a one percent rise in the index, according to the Central Bureau of Statis- tics. Food prices in Feb- ruary rose by six percent, including a 14.7 percent in- crease in the cost of fruit and vegetables.
