WASHINGTON (JTA) —
With an array of exhibitions
of Egyptian paintings,
sculptures, tapestry, dance
and films, an exposition of
ancient and modern Egyp-
tian culture was held in
Washington last week.
Mayor Marion Barry pro-
claimed the week Egypt
Today Week. The celebra-
tion was officially opened by
Jihan Sadat, wife of Egyp-
tian President Anwar
Sadat.
The program was spon-
sored and organized by the
Middle East Institute, the
Smithsonian and Meridan
House International. Pro-
grams of this kind to help
international understand-
ing were begun by the Na-
tional Endowment for the
Humanities in 1977 with a
program featuring Canada.
Mexico, Japan and Belgium
were featured in later years.

The delegation told
General Viola welcomed
reports following his
meetings in Washington
that action would be
taken with regard to the
thousands of "disap-
peared" persons and
prisoners in Argentina, a
matter of deep human
rights and international
concern.
General Viola asserted it
was recognized that there
were excesses in the na-
tion's internal war, but now
that this war was over one
would find Argentina a land
of law, justice and social
tranquility moving toward
greater democracy.
Anti-Semitic acts such as
the desecration of cemetery
gravestones and the explo-
sive attacks some time ago
against various Argentine
Jewish institutions were
the work of maladjusted
persons and could not be
considered the responsibil-
ity of the Argentine gov-
