ISRAEL ALIYAH CENTER Reuven Leibovich .6600 W. Maple West Bloomfield, Michigan (313) 661-1000 (Jonathan David Pub- lishers). While as titled this is a Passover book, it is a suitable all-year-round strictly kosher cookbook and it fulfills many needs for the Jewish home. The culinary arts de- picted in the Avrutick hook indicate the many changes that have taken place, the variety of foods that can now be prepared for Passover, contrary to the restrictions of past ages when kashrut was re- stricted by unavailability of products that are now available and prepared to adhere to the laws of kas- hrut. Mrs. Avrutick offers recipes that have been tested and have the strict provisions of the dietary requirements. There are the main dishes and de- licious desserts. Of course, there are the kneidlakh and kreplakh, the Passover delights, and also fleishig Russian borsht, liver, potato and matzo dumplings, gefilte fish quiche, kugels, latkes, blintzes — ad infinitum. Who would have thought a generation ago that the Passover desserts could in- clude, sherbets, eclairs, brandied bon-bons, lemon merangue pie, cheese strudels? Mrs. Avrutick proves they are available and can be prepared by the responsive housewife. The publishers plan to in- troduce the book in all Jewish bookstores and are prepared to respond to cal- lers at a toll free number, 1-800-854-2975. Proof of the impres- siveness of this volume is provided in these sample recipes from Mrs. Av- rutick's book: 25 - Immigration Low Caricatures TEL AVIV (JTA) — A 10-year record low in immi-, gration was registered dur- ing February when only 857 newcomers arrived in Is- rael, according to the Jewish Agency's immigra- tion department. Mayor Is Criticized for Remarks on Atlanta WASHINGTON (JTA) — The White House and representatives of Jewish organizationS have taken strong exception to Wash- ington Mayor Marion Bar- ry's remarks that if the 21 black children murdered in Atlanta "had been Jewish, the federal government would have moved much faster" to help solve the crimes. "If they had been any- thing except black they would have moved faster," Barry said at a press confer- ence. He made his state- ments in response to a re- porter's question as to whether he stood by similar views he expressed earlier this month about the At- lanta tragedies. Hyman Bookbinder, Washington representative of the American Jewish Committee, said that for Barry "to talk about the Jews and imply that we are all safe and protected is an outrage. We are going through a period of serious escalation of vandalism against Jewish places of worship in this country. "I regret that he is being this careless in his articulation. It is espe- cially painful to me to hear things like that knowing ,how silent the world was when six mil- lion Jews were killed." Alan Grip, Barry's press secretary, said that Barry "is not trying to say that whites don't care. He is say- ing that in his guts his per- ception is that had they been white children, the Friday, March 17, 1981 federal government might have been inclined to pro- vide the help faster than they did. He did not mean to single out Jews. He meant if they had been anybody. Declaring that "clearly this is not a racial issue," a White House source told the JTA, "What we've done is unprecedented. Clearly this (the Atlanta killings) is a local matter. We set a pre- cedent by becoming in- volved because this is such a tragedy." The federal government has provided $2.5 million in the last six weeks for the At- lanta police investigation.
