Directed by Boris Sagal,
produced by George Ecks-
tein and written for televi-
sion by Joel Oliansky, the
Universal Television Prod-
uction is based upon the
novel "The Antagonists" by
Ernest K. Gann.
The story of "Masada"
concerns a determined band
of 960 men, women and
children, called Zealots,
who make a final stand
against tyranny by holding
an ancient fortress high
atop Mount Masada, 1,300
feet above the Judean Des-
ert near the Dead Sea, from
the Tenth Legion of the con-
quering Roman Army.
For four years, the
freedom fighters defied
the might of Rome as they
defended their one small,
symbolic parcel of un-
conquered territory. Fi-
nally, in the year 73 CE,
the Romans breached the
fortress walls. Yet their
victory was brief and bit-
ter, for the rebels had
found in suicide a way to
defy the conquerers for
eternity.
Peter O'Toole portrays
General Cornelius Flavius
Silva, the leader of the
Roman legion. His assign.
ment is to break through
Masada's defenses, to show

the world the futility of
challenging Roman power.
His personal goal is simply
to settle the matter, peace-
fully if possible, on terms of
mutual honor that will
allow him to return home to
a victorious retirement.
Peter Strauss is -Eleazar
ben Yair, the fiery leader of
the rebel band who is con-
demned by many of his own
people for the Zealots' ruth-
less resistance to the armies
of occupation. Eleazar's
dream is also of peace — but
of peace achieved with dig-
nity, and without the ulti-
mate humiliation of the
enslavement of his people.
Silva's goal and Eleazar's
dream are the same. The re-
lentless momentum of poli-
tics and power crush both.
Masada is the anvil-
shaped rock that be-
comes the battleground
between these historic
forces. For the ABC pre-
sentation, replicas of the
ancient fortress and the
Roman assault ramp
were constructed, along
with the livestock pens
and gardens that sup-
ported the rebels during
the four years that they
maintained the last bas-
tion of freedom in their
war-ravaged country.
The documentation of
events occurring at Masada
is a brief account written by
first-Century historian
Flavius Josephus. Certain
fictional events and char-
acters have been created for
dramatic purposes. The ac-
curacy of the recreated re-
bels' fortress is based on the
archeological expedition led
by Yigael Yadin.
Academy Award-winner
Jerry Goldsmith has writ-
ten the music for "Masada,"
and Albert Whitlock pro-
vided the special visual ef-
fects. Paul Lohmann was
director of photography for
the entire eight hours, and
Richard Irving was execu-
tive in charge of production.
Ernest K. Gann's "The
Antagonists," originally
published by Simon and
Schuster, has been retitled
"Masada" and reissued in
paperback by Jove Publica-
tions.
Roman
General
Flavius Silva is Peter
O'Toole's first television
role, and his dramatic
portrait of the .compas-
sionate Roman warrior
brings to mind his film
roles as Lawrence in
"Lawrence of Arabia"
and,Henry II in "Becket"
and "Lion in Winter." An
Irishman with his profes-
sional acting roots in the
,-British theater, O'Toole
has been honored with
five Academy Award
nominations. He has per-
formed a variety of
Shakespearean roles on
the British stage.
In contrast with O'Toole,
Peter Strauss is very much
a product of television. His
performance as the Jewish
rebel leader, Eleazar ben
Yair, is the most recent in a
series of starring roles in'
television. Strauss first cap-
tured audience attention for
his performance in "Rich
Man, Poor Man." He also
starred in "Young Joe: The
Forgotten Kennedy," and
he received an Emmy for his
