The waterway project,
connecting the Mediterra-
nean Sea with the Dead Sea,
will produce hydro-electric
power to meet at least 20
percent of all Israel's energy
needs, thus greatly reduc-
ing Israel's dependence on
foreign oil. The interseas
waterway was envisaged 80
years ago in Theodor Herzl's
book "Altneuland." Current
plans foresee associated
benefits that include wate .
to cool nuclear plants, th,
boasting of the Dead Sea
level for improved mineral
harvesting and energy for
desalination.
A hydrologist, Kantor
has been associated with
Mekorot for two decades.
The system has gained
acclaim for its extremely
high utilization of Israel's
fresh water resources.
Kantor also serves as ad-
viser to the World Bank for
water supply in developing
countries. He has been de-
puty president of the Inter-
national Organization for
Irrigation and Drainage
since 1971. Countries he
has assisted in water de-
velopment include Nepal,
El Salvador and Nicaragua.
