index rose by 5.5 percent in
February, the Central
Bureau of Statistics re-
ported. The figure was
seized upon by supporters of

rier Mezada which sank in
the North Atlantic near
Bermuda on March 8 were
advised by Chief Rabbi
Shlomo Goren to begin the
traditional week of mourn-
ing as of last Sunday.
The families were
notified that the men could
be presumed dead after the
U.S. Navy and Coast Guard
ended a five-day sea-air
search last week without
recovering additional
bodies or survivors.
Of the 35 persons aboard
the ship when she found-

ered, 11 were rescued, 12

were known to have
drowned and 12 were mis-

President Reagan's Ad-
ministration took office in
January, told 161 partici-
pants in the United Jewish
Appeal Washington Lead-
ership Mission that Israel is
"fundamental" to the

strategic interests of the

Speaking at a reception in
his honor on Capitol Hill
last week, Bush said that
"Israel's innate strength
will be maintained by this
Administration and Con-
gress," and added that "in-
ternational terror will not
be condoned as a means for
political change."

JERUSALEM — The
Jerusalem Writers Work-
shop will again be spon-
sored this summer by He-
brew University.
Held on the Mount Scopus
campus in the framework of
the university's summer
courses in English —`which
draw an annual enrollment
of 1,000 from around the
world — the workshop will
consist of three weeks of in-
tensive writing and
analysis for writers and
teachers of writing.
A choice of three major
workshops is offered: the
writing of poetry, the writ-
ing of fiction, and the teach-
ing of creative writing.
Internationally known
Israeli writers and poets,
including A.B. Yehoshua,
Amoz Oz and Yehuda
Amichai , will give special
talks on Israel writing
and read from their own
works. Among the spe-
cialists conducting the
major workshops is the
prize - winning American
poet now living in
Jerusalem, Shirley
Kaufman.
The workshop will run
from July 5-29, and can be
taken for three unjversity
credits.
