Israeli Play About Yerida

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The air connection between
Israel and Egypt has now
been in operation for one
year, with El Al and Nefer-
titi Airlines flying both
passengers and freight.
There have been 253
round trips during the year,
136 by El Al and 117 by
Nefertiti. El Al carried
34,927 passengers and
Nefertiti 26,354. Thirty-
,- -Tilt percent of the places
3ked were sold in Israel,
33 percent in the U.S„ 19
percent in Egypt and the
rest elsewhere.

Autonomy Need

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
After meeting with
President Anwar Sadat of
Egypt, President Yitzhak.
Navon of Israel told report-
ers that Sadat is genuinely
concerned about autonomy
for the Palestinians.
Navon said that without
autonomy the Israeli-
Egyptian peace treaty will
be nothing more than a
temporary cease fire.

The problem of yerida,
the emigration of Israelis,
continues to torment the
people of Thrael. Some even
consider it to be the number
one national problem of the
Jewish state, contending
that the phenomenon •of
tens of thousands of Israelis
who seek happiness in the
galut (Diaspora) is a nega-
tion of the bask Zionist be-
lief of Israel as the gather-
ing place for the Jews of the
world.
Now, the issue of yerida is
dealt with on the stage, in a
play named "Tel Aviv - New
York - Tel Aviv," currently
in the Haan Theater in
Jerusalem. The play, writ-
ten by Rami Rosen and di-
rected by Aaron Almog,
tells the story of three yor-
dim who have been living in
a dilapidated New York
apartment for five years,
amid shattered dreams and
a harsh reality.
But despite their misera-
ble lives they do not think of
returning to Israel. They

are ashamed to admit to
their friends and family
back home that their lives
in America are a failure.
"Tel Aviv - New York -
Tel Aviv," is not only a
drama about yerida but
also about people with-
out roots who are emo-
tionally displaced and
troubled. In a way, the
suffering, unhappy souls
of the play are the mod-
ern version of the
"Talush" — the rootless
Jew who lives in the
galut, who does not be-
long to any place, whose
life is an eternal hell of no
exit.
The play is the first seri-
ous attempt to deal with the
issue of yerida from the as-
pect of the individual who
lives in a foreign culture
and environment without
really having a sense of be-
longing, but at the same
time lacking the will or the
power to return back to Is-
rael and its roots.

Yordim Question
Divides Israel

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Almost half the Israeli pub-
lic thinks special efforts
should he made to encour-
age yordim (emmigrants) to
return to Israel, according
to a recent poll conducted by
the modiin Ezrachi Applied
Research Center.
The poll found that 47.8
percent think that special
customs reductions and
other benefits should be
granted yordim to help
entice them to return. How-
ever, 35.2 percent favor a
"do nothing" policy, while
13.5 percent feel that yor-
dim should be boycotted,
with some even advocating
the cancellation of their
pasports after an absence
abroad of five years. An-
other 3.5 percent were un-
decided.
