THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 0/ O Off 0 VERTICALS—DRAPES---BLINDS Polish Envoy Unequivocally' Condemns Anti-Semitism WASHINGTON (JTA) Romuald Ambassador Spasowski, Poland's envoy to the United States, said here that he "unequivocally condemned" all anti- Semitic manifestations in Poland and specifically the outdoor rally last week in Warsaw at which speakers denounced Jews as a "Zionist clique" and charged that "Zionists" were attempting to seize wer in Poland through -le independent movement, Solidarity, which is seeking internal reforms. Spasowski made his con- demnation to a delegation from the World Jewish Congress in a 90-minute meeting last week at the Polish Embassy in Wash- ington. The WJCongress had re- quested the meeting follow- ing the rally and an article in the Polish armed forces daily publication, "Soldiers of Liberty," that appeared to condone the anti-Semitic sentiments expressed at the rally. Earlier last week, the WJCongress along . with other American Jewish organizations, including the American Jewish Committee and the Bnai Brith International, de- nounced the anti-Semitic manifestations in Poland and called upon the gov- ernment to condemn them. Spasovyski said that he personally and and his gov- ernment "unequivocally condemn all anti-Semitic manifestations in any form" within Poland, 'and the Polish government, "will not tolerate any anti- Semitic expression." The WJCongress delega- tion said it expressed anx- iety to Spasowski about the official Polish armed forces organ, "Soldiers of Solidar- ity," which, the delegation said, on March 10 "con- doned the actions of the rightist elements in Poland who are trying to discredit Solidarity and accusing its leaders of 'Zionism'." The organ was also re- ported as saying that "the manipulators of the youth in 1968 want to realize the goals of Israel not Poland." This was a reference to a charge that Jews in the Politburo during the Stalinist era were responsi- ble for the "blood bath" of Polish patriots. The delegation also said that despite the dis- avowal by Poland's Minister of Internal Af- fairs, Gen. Mieczyslaw Moczar, of his involve- ment in anti-Semitic man- ifestations during the 1968 official anti-Semitic period in Poland when he was Interior Minister, his rise to present promi- nence might encourage anti-Semitic elements. Moczar is presently a member of the Politburo and is expected to be the next president of Poland. Meanwhile, Stefan Grayek, chairman of the World Federation of Jewish Fighters and Partisans, who just returned from a visit to Poland and Czechos- lovakia, said the recent anti-Semitic incidents in Poland were a minor man- ifestation by former anti- Communist underground forces dating from World War II. Grayek, sometimes de- scribed as Israel's "unoffi- cial ambassador" to Poland in the absence of diplomatic relations, said the anti- Semitic demonstrations were opposed by the gov- ernment and denounced by the Catholic Church and the According to the New York Times, the gatherings that the authorities object to are the Sunday seminars started in 1972 by Soviet Jewish scientists who lost their jobs when they applied to emigrate and who saw the weekly meetings as a way of keeping up their ex- pertise. Visitors from the West were known to attend these seminars. Mrs. Brailovsky took over as host for the seminar when her husband, a former computer specialist, was ar- rested Nov. 13 on charges of "willful defathation of the Soviet state and social sys- tem." The charge may be linked to Brailovsky's ac- tivities as editor of the jour- nal, "Jews in the USSR," which ceased publication in 1979. In Geneva, Richard Schifter, the U.S. alter- nate delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Commission meet- ing here, renewed his at- tack on anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union and de- clared that the American people will not accept a double standard in inter- national affairs — one for the Soviet bloc and its friends and another for the rest of the world.
