Once Active Jewish Community in Hungary Resurfacing

The authorities promised
to maintain religious and
cultural freedom for the
Jews, to allow prayers in
synagogues and private
houses, to give religious
education to children, or-
ganize meetings of all
Jewish communities in the
country, publish newspap-
ers and manuscripts and
open yeshivot and a rabbin-
ical seminary.
The communities also
obtained rights for ritual
slaughter and aid for old
people, the sick, poor and
orphans and for burials.
After the agreement was
signed', all Jewish
were
schools
nationalized.
There are today more
than 120 synagogues in
Hungary — 30 of them in
Budapest. One can find a
minyan in every synagogue.
Many synagogues had to be
sold, especially in smaller
places in which Jewish
communities ceased to
exist. But rabbis travel be-
tween small communities
and deal with their reli-
gious activities.
One can get kosher meat
everywhere. Kosher wine
and matzot are exported
from Hungary to East Ger-
many, Czechoslovakia and
Poland. In the Jewish corn-
munity in Budapest one can
find a kosher restaurant
and bakery. Religious wed-
dings and Brit Mila cere-
monies take place and there
is a mikva (ritual bath) and
hevra kadisha (burial
society).
In the synagogues, cul-
tural performances and lec-
tures about Jewish history
and achievements take
place. There is a choir which
gives concerts. Every two
weeks the state radio broad-
casts a 15-minute Jewish

The Jews in Hungary
are proud of the rabbini-
cal seminary in
Budapest. This is the only
seminary in Eastern
Europe. There are four
students from Russia at
the seminary and one
from Czechoslovakia.
Last year, one of the stu-
dents from the Soviet
Union was ordained a
rabbi and is now assis-
tant to the Chief Rabbi
Fishman in the Moscow
Synagogue.
The seminary also oper-
ates the Ann Frank High
School. It is a mixed school
with 50 pupils age 14-18.
The Hungarian Jewish
community has also re-
newed its relationship with
the Joint Distribution
Committee. It receives reg-
ular religious assistance
from JDC. In Budapest
there is an orphanage for
boys and girls.
From the four Jewish
hospitals before the war
only one with 200 beds is
left. This hospital receives
financial assistance from
the Hungarian govern-
ment. The hospital was re-
paired a short time ago.
Near the hospital is one of
the two Jewish homes for
elderly.
Near Lake Balaton is a
kosher resort for Jewish
teachers. Founded in the
1930s, it is often visited by
tourists from all over the
world.
The Jewish Museum is
the house in which Zionist
leader Dr. Theodor Herzl
was born, near the Central
Synagogue. The Jewish li-
brary of the rabbinical sem-
inary houses the archives of
all the _Jewish communities
in Hungary which were de-

Later that month, 60 Is-
raeli students will visit
Egypt as guests of the Egyp-
tian pupils who visited
them in Israel.
The students will pay
only the cost of their air
fares, with the rest of their
expenses covered by the
governments of Israel and
Egypt.
