YOU ASK HOW a very
good restaurant can get bet-
ter? . . . Take a visit to the
new Mario's on Second, now
owned by Frank
Passalacqua, and discover
this fact.
A long-standing institu-
tion of fine dining, Mario's
has reached even greater

heights . . . Through the
doors of its large kitchen
come some of the very best
Northern Italian cuisine to
be found in the area.
Mario's is a regular in
every publication listing top
places to dine in this region
. . . and one of the places
always recommended to vis-
itors coming to Detroit.
Each visit to the new
Mario's is an experience
. . . My waiter this time
was Achille Bianchi, four
years:at Mario's . . . from
Milan, Italy . . . and a
superb young man . . . so
very efficient, polite, ex-
tremely courteous and
most attentive . . . all the
attributes you would
want in a very good wai-
ter.
- While we enjoyed the
fruity flavor from a bottle of
Pinot Bianco with its deli-
cate taste, Achille brought
delicious hot cheese bread,
garlic bread and antipasto
. . . then made salads at
our tableside.
The minestrone soup was
Better than we've ever had
it at Mario's . . . same with
the thick spaghetti meat
sauce . . . Whatever
Frank's chef did was a tur-
nabout in the right direc-
tion.
My Veal Tosca, thin slices
of veal dipped in a batter
with eggs, parsley, cheese,
garlic and cream . . .
brought to a thin breading
and served with its excel-
lent delicate flavor . . . was
one of many perfect choices I
could have made.
For dessert, Zuppa In-
glese, the very light
Brandy Custard over
layers of cake . . .
steeped in Cream of Al-
mond and Cream de
Cacao.
And to finish off a won-
derful meal, Achille
brought us pieces of melon,
whole strawberries and
grapes.
Frank Passalacqua has
done much to enhance the
great Mario's tradition of
fine dining . . . The new
Mario's is even better.
RONNIE PHILLIPS,
fine pianist with whom sin-
gers like to warble with his.
background key tingling,
has returned to Jakks,
Greenfield and 10 Mile, on
Monday evenings . . . This
makes it entertainment all
six nights . . . with Carl
Steger still doing- his popu-
lar thing at Jakks piano bar
Tuesday through Saturday.
OF SPECIAL INTER-
EST to senior citizens . .
is the March 21 historic De-
troit Chamber Works all-
Bach concert at Orchestra
Hall . . . celebrating the
296th birthday of Johann
Sebastian Bach, who died in
1970 . . . There'll even be a
birthday cake . . . and it's
free for seniors and their
friends.
