THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 38 Friday, March 13, 1981 Labor Party Would Assure Religious Pluralism Eban JERUSALEM (JTA) — If the Labor Alignment wins the June 30 election it will introduce legislation into the next Knesset assuring that all segments of Judaism will have equality, former Foreign Minister Abba Eban has promised. Eban, who is a Labor MK, made this pledge at the re- ception he gave for the dele- gates to the 13th convention of the World Council of Synagogues and the 81st annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, the organization of American Conservative Rabbis. It is the first time the two groups have held a joint convention and it is the first time their conventions have been held in Israel. Jews in Israel should not give preference to one trend in Judaism over another, Eban said. He rejected the approach up to now in which Orthodoxy is the only offi- cially recognized form of Judaism in Israel. In his opening speech to the con- vention last night, Rabbi Seymour Cohen, president of the Rabbinical Assembly, also urged Israelis to give equal status to all move- ments in Judaism. Muskie Joins Law Firm WASHINGTON (JTA) — Edmund Muskie, former Secretary of State in the Carter Administration, will join the international law firm Chadbourne, Parke, Whitesaide and Wolff as a senior partner. The firm has offices in New York, Wash- ington and the United Arab Emirates. The report said Muskie, who left the Senate to join the Carter Administration last summer, expects to spend most of his time in Washington. Reagan gave those as- sureances at a 20-minute meeting with five leading Jewish Republican suppor- ters at the White House. They also met with Vice President George Bush and top Presidential aides in the course of the White House meeting which lasted about two hours. Max Fisher, who was honorary co-chairman of the Committee for Reagan-Bush, the top Jewish group supporting the President's election, told reporters, "We came out feeling relieved." He said "Reagan stated categorically" that "the balance of power in the Middle East will not be dis- turbed." He quoted the President as stating he was "totally committed to Is- rael's military superiority and the security of Israel." Fisher said that after discussion of the President's economic and defense programs "we were convinced we shoUld give him total support and we will give him total support." Fisher made it clear, however, that those meet- ing with the President did so as "representa- tives" of the Coalition for Reagan-Bush and that "we were not representa- tives of any joint Jewish community. effort." Gordon Zacks, of Colum- bus, Ohio, said of the Saudi firms deal, "We preferred that there would not be a sale" of the additional equipment "but since there is a sale, we are comforta- ble" because "the balance of power will be maintained." He said that "in subsequent talks" the qualitative secu- . 12 Are Rescued from Israeli Ship NEW YORK (JTA) — As of Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard had rescued 12 persons and recovered 12 bodies in the Atlantic Ocean 95 miles east of Bermuda where the 19,000-ton Israeli bulk carrier Mezada sank in heavy seas on Sunday. Twelve members of the Israeli and foreign crew were still missing. The Mezada, built for the Zim Lines in the 1960s, was one day from its destination in Baltimore when it began' taking on water during a storm and sank. The others attending the meeting were Theodore Cummings of Los Angeles, who was honorary co- chairman, with Fisher, of the Coalition for Reagan- Bush, and Jack Stein and George Klein of New York. Fisher later said he was relieved by the President's statements on the Saudi is- sue. He noted, however, that "some of us felt better, some of us didn't feel quite so good" after the meeting. Klein said he was "dis- appointed" by the sale of equipment but expressed hope that "before the Saudi package deal is completed the matter will be resolved both for the sake of America as well as Israel." The Israeli Cabinet and other officials expressed displeasure over the weekend with the Reagan Administration decision. Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir said the sale would accelerate the Middle East arms race. Other Cabinet members expressed their opposition, but Israel ap- parently plans no further protest. Meanwhile, a number of Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress have announced their intention to fight the sale. Those who have spoken out against the sale include Senators Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.), Robert Packwood (R-Ore.), Rudy Boschwitz (R-Minn.), Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.), Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), Joseph Biden (D-Del.), Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), and Carl Levin (D-Mich.) The decision, aimed at guarding the Saudis from potential threats from the Soviet Union, Iraq or South Yemen, also will give the Saudis the capability of monitoring all israeli air- craft movements. Press reports also said that the U.S. has decided to spend $1 billion on the Egyptian airfield at Ras Banas near the Red Sea and gain U.S. access to the base.
