Similarly, the authors of
the demographic report on
Jewish, population in the
United States, Alvin Chen-
kin and Maynard Miran of
the Council of Jewish Fed-
erations, warn that "some
communities conduct for-
mal population studies,
others estimate roughly on
the basis of lists of known
Jewish households."
Chenkin and Miran fore-
cast that the trend to the
Sun Belt is expected to con-
tinue as many of the older
cities in the north-central
and northeast United
States "have not yet fully
reported their population
losses."
They estimate that the
current U.S. Jewish popula-
tion is 5,920,900, a modest
increase over the previous
year's figure of 5,860,900.
The South. and West corn-
prise 31 percent of the total,
as compared to 30.2 in 1979
and 29.1 in 1978. The
Northeast and north"-
central states represent 69
percent of the total Jewill
population, as compered to
69.8 and 70.9 in 1979 and
1978 respectively.

The greater part of the
Lustiger family remained
in Poland. It was a big fam-
ily, and nearly all its mem-
bers were killed at Au-
schwitz. Shmuel was sent
before the outbreak of
World War II to Marseille,
France, to study chemistry.
He remained there from
1936 to 1939. He worked in
a French cosmetics factory
near Nice.

One day the owner of the
factory invited him for
lunch and told him that the
Germans are getting ready
to attack Poland. Shmuel
Lustiger decided to return
immediately to Poland, to
his parents and family.
His cousin Jean-Marie at
the outbreak of the war was
given asylum with Chris-
tians in order to save his
life. His mother was sent/to
Auschwitz and died in 1943.
His father is still living in
Paris.
Shmuel Lustiger was sent
from one death camp to an-
other during the war and
was liberated in Mauth-
auSen. His weight was 77
pounds. A nun, who cared
for him in the hospital, tried
to convince him to convert
to Christianity as a gesture
of gratitude for saving his
life, but he refused.
Lustiger opened a big fac-
tory in Israel to produce re-
frigerators. He heard about
his cousin in France from a
relative, who lives in Ger-
many and had visited the
Lustiger family.
Shmuel Lustiger did
not renew his contacts
with his cousin at the
time. He. will go in a few
months to Europe and in-
tends to visit his cousin,
the Archbishop of Paris.
"I wish to talk to him
about the tragic fate of
our family," he told us.
The London Jewish
Chronicle reported dif-
ferences of opinion between
the• Vatican and French
President Giscard d'Esta-
ing about the nomination of
Lustiger as Archbishop of
Paris. D'Estaing revealed to
the public that. Lustiger was
a Jew and had converted to
Christianity in 1943 at the
age of 14.
