By ARNOLD AGES TORONTO — Stewart Steven, deputy editor of the London Daily Mail, has made a series of sensational revelations about the Is- raeli intelligence commu- nity including the startling assertion that President Sadat's visit to Israel in 1977 was in partial recom- pense for an Israeli warning about an impending assas- sination attack against the Egyptian leader mounted by Libya's Colonel Qaddafi. In his "The Spymasters of Israel" (Macmillan) Steven concludes, after interview- ing more than 200 people involved in Israeli intelli- gence work since 1948, that: • The Israelis warned the CIA about the fragility of the Shah's government but that the warnings went un- heeded as "the special rela- tionships of the Jewish state ,' • The Saudi Arabian authorities were in- formed by Israel's Mos- sad that Muslim radicals were preparing an as- sault on the Mecca shrine but that the authorities disregarded the Israeli information. • The famous de- Stalinization speech pre- sented by Nikita Khruschev at the 20th Communist Party congress in 1956 was secreted out of the Soviet Union by Israeli agents and handed over to the CIA. • Abba Eban, the eloquent foreign minister in the Golda Meir govern- ment, was infuriated when he learned that he had been used by the Mossad in its elaborate scheme to remove Adolph Eichmann from his Buenos Aires home. • Wolfgang Lotz, an Is- raeli "mole" Who unsuccess- fully functioned as a weal- thy horseman in Cairo in the '60s and who was later convicted by the Egyptians as an Israeli spy, might have been trained by Ger- man intelligence (the Gehlen organization) as part of German-Israel coop- eration. • Yuval Neiman, a bril- liant atomic physicist and political activist in Israel's right wing coal- tion, invented the com- puterized submarine tracking system used by NATO. An early warning sensor network which he devised was implanted in Sinai in the '60s and al- most triggered a war due to a malfunction. • General De Gaulle's es- trangement from Israel in 1967 was not caused by Is- rael's pre-emptive strike in 1967 (although it was a fac- tor) but by the complicity of Israel's Mossad in the as- sassination of Mehdi Ben- Barka, a Moroccan oppo- nent of the then King Has- san. • An unnamed Israeli agent who infiltrated the PLO in the '60s rose to a position of command in the terror organization. When his cover was about to be blown, the Israelis brought him back to Tel Aviv, from which time he has been one of the most fervent advo- cates of a pro-Palestinian position. • The current chief of the general staff in Israel, Rafael Eytan, participated in the 1968 raid on the Be- irut airport when the Is- raelis destroyed 16 aircraft on the ground. During the operation Eytan calmly walked into the passenger lounge, requested coffee and promptly paid for it. • During the famous assault on Entebbe in 1976, which resulted in the release of Israeli hos- tages held by Palestinian terrorists with the conni- vance of Idi Amin, the Is- raelis emplaced 50 of their best-trained parat- roops in the middle of Lake Victoria. The crack unit was to be used in the event that the Entebbe raiders encountered problems. Steven makes the impor- tant point in his preface that Israel never uses Jewish citizens outside of Israel for intelligence ac- tivities.
