West Bank' vs. 'Judea, Samaria'

The Detroit Zionist Fed-
eration at great expense
brings in a scholar-in-
residence, Israeli Prof. Dan
Schueftan, to help our
community combat Arab
propaganda.
But what kind of help is it
to constantly refer to the
"West Bank" rather than
"Judea and Samaria?" The
r-- "West Bank" is Jordan's
:lame for the area they il-
legally seized and annexed
in 1948. It includes the Old
City of Jerusalem. The
name "West Bank" indi-
cates that the territory be-
longs to the Arabs and a
Jewish presence is illegal.
The propaganda is

spread that while Jews
share a religion they are
not a people and a reli-
gion is not entitled to a
country; but the "Pales-
tinians," ' they are a
people and they have
been deprived of their
homeland, "Palestine,"
which we call "Israel."
Many have come to ac-
cept this.
The American Zionist
Federation answered those
PLO supporters by telling
how Jews settled the empty
land and swamps in Pales-
tine, bringing a tremendous
influx of new sources of
livelihood. They tell how

A Definition of Being Jewish

Jewish behavior has been
and still is the backbone of
Jewish faith and thus
Jewish tradition. Labeling
Youngster X as "Jewish" is
an error both because no
single personality trait can
accurately represent an
entire individual and be-
cause Judaism is meaning-
less without reference to
explicit behaviors.
Thus, a more accurate
definition is that Jewish
behavior is a certain re-
sponse tendency toward cul-
tural and religious practices
presumably embedded in
tradition.
This means tradition is
a product of Jewish be-
havior.And con-

sequently,
because
human development be-
gins with imitation and
proceeds to a complex
integration of ideas, so it
can be shown that Jewish
behavior in its early
formative stages assimi-
lates into an individual's
personal identity and
proceeds by complex
integration to an exercise
of Jewish tradition.
Alas, the twain between
identity and tradition could
meet. However, the extent
to which they do meet or
participate in harmbny is
entirely a question of cul-
tural influence. And indeed,
here is where the point of
departure is most profound.

tion of America on Feb. 21

Mr. Sisco emphasized that
"there will have to be some

ritorial concessions in the
autonomy negotiations."
Mr. Sisco's statement was
the sour note in his address.
It proved that his views on
the "Palestinian solution"
