Orthodox
Congregations
In 1925, there were at
least 25 Orthodox congrega-
tions in Detroit. Some were
"Anshe" (landsmanshaft)
congregations; others were
neighborhood congrega-
tions built and supported by
Rabbath observing Jews.
Two of Detroit's oldest
Orthodox congregations
were Bnai Israel, founded in
1871, and Beth Abraham,
founded in 1892. In 1925,
Bnai Israel was composed of
RABBI FISCHER
200 members and Beth Ab-
raham of 300 members.
Their spiritual leaders, re-
spectively, were Rabbis
Judah L. Levin and Ezekiel
Aisishkin.
Bnai Israel's charter
members were Isaac Levy,
Kalman Freeman, David
Rosenthal,
Jacob
Burnstine,
Jacob
Brownstine,
Mendel
Starsky and Isaac Adelson.
The congregation was lo-
cated at 578 E. Ferry St.
Beth Abraham, whose
members were Galician
Jews, "was active as a
spiritual center" and was
located at 433 E. Palmer
Ave. Its officers were:
Pinchas Greenberg,
president; J. Adler, vice
president; Mendel Sishal,
treasurer; and J. Rich,
secretary.

gregation of Delray,
founded in 1916, were built

Alvin Toffler's "The Third
Wave" (Bantam), now
available in paperback, of-
fers readers a solid defini-
tion of religious cults and
details ways to combat the
complex, cult phenomenon.
In the book, Toffler
suggests that the way to
fight the influence of cults is
through what he calls "life
organizers" and "semi-
cults." A "life organizer"
would be a professional or
para-professional trained to
help people in such practical
matters as budgeting, find-
ing a boyfriend or
girlfriend, or sticking to a
diet.
For those people who
need the regimentation
that cults offer, Toffler
suggests that religious
organizations, vegeta-
rians and other sects
might be encouraged to
form "semi-cults" --
organizations in which
moderate to high
structure is imposed on
those who wish to live
that way. The "semi-
cults" would, of course,
be licensed and moni-
tored.
Toffier, a former Fortune
magazine editor whose last
book "Future Shock" was an
international bestseller, be-
lieves that the need for cults
is being triggered because
the world is now in the
midst of a "Third wave" of
change (the first wave was
agricultural, the second
industrial). While this third
wave is creating an ex-
traordinary and potentially
rewarding new civilization,
the transition has left many
people lonely, unsure of how
act, and feeling that life
,s no meaning.
