The new program helps prepare school dropouts from deprived backgrounds for acceptance in the army. Bar-Ilan Cites L.A.'s Mayor LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Mayor Tom Brad- ley has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Israel's Bar- Ilan University, which has also established a professo- rial chair in his honor. The honor was conferred by university president Dr. Emanuel Rackman at a re- cent dinner in Beverly Hills, Calif. Film star Greg- ory Peck was master of ceremonies at the affair, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of Bar-Ilan. Nuclear Future? TEL AVIV (JNI) — Israel may operate three or four nuclear power plants, sup- plying 25-40 percent of her electricity, by the year 2000 according to Uzi Eilam, di- rector of Israel's Atomic Energy Commission. He said that sites for nu- clear power plants have been identified near Lach- ish and in the Negev and Galilee. He said that the Negev's phosphate indus- tries can produce the anium necessary to open __. the plants. ille Roth Serialized NEW YORK — Philip Roth's next novel will ap- pear in full in serialized form in three magazines be- fore it is published as a novel. Edmonton Jews Have Newspaper EDMONTON, Alberta (JTA) — The first issue last December of the Jewish Star of Edmonton, the pro- vincial capital of Alberta, marked the beginning of the paper's monthly service to the Edmonton Jewish com- munity. The Edmonton publica- tion is a separate monthly edition of the Jewish Star of Calgary and is now the only regular Jewish newspaper in Edmonton. Israel maintains friendly rela- tions with countries that have some of the largest coal reserves in the world: the U.S., Canada, South Af- rica and Australia. Israel will spend $2 bil- lion for imported oil this year, and $2.5 billion next year. If coal were burned to create the same amount of power, Israel would save $1.5 billion each year.
