Oil Lessening Need for M.E.
NEW YORK —The world
is becoming less and less
dependent on Middle East
oil, according to Dr. Eliyahu
Kanovsky, a professor of
economics at Israel's Bar-
Ilan University.
Prof. Kanovsky main-
tains that Middle East oil is
declining in importance to
the United States and other
Western countries for four
specific reasons:
The development of
sources of oil supply in other
parts of the world—Alaska,
Mexico, the North Sea and
elsewhere; the consequent
displacement of OPEC oil
by other exporters; the re-
placement of oil with other
sources of energy; and the
increased efficiency of oil
consumers.
