Zionist Pioneer Laid Groundwork or Reviving Farming in Israel

The first building at
Mikve Israel was named
Beth Netter, in honor of the
founder of the historic proj-
ect. Beth Netter has just
been remodeled and the at-
tention of world Jewry is at-
tracted to the school and in
memorializing the founder
as a consequence.
The story of Charles Net-
ter is one of the most fas-
cinating in Zionist history.
In 1898, an extraordinary

The Kaiser rode up to Herzl
on a black horse, accom-
panied by his entourage.
Extending his hand to Herzl
he said: Is all well?"
" 'And how does the land
seem to you?' Herzl asked.
" It's dry and thirsty, but
it will have a great future.'
" 'Yes, Your Majesty,'
said Herzl. "This land has a
yesterday and tomorrow but
it has no today.' "
The Herzl-Kaiser meet-
ing was recalled on the
occasion of the 110th an-
niversary of Mikve Is-
rael, which rates as Is-
rael's first agricultural
settlement.
For the last 110 years it
has been operating as the
major secondary agricul-
tural school in Israel.

meeting took place at the
gate of Mikve Israel, the
first Jewish agricultural
school in Israel, then Pales-
tine. Kaiser Wilhelm had
come to the Holy Land with
an entourage of Germans
and he was met there by
Theodor Herzl, the founder
of the political Zionist
movement.
The Jerusalem Post re-
cently described that
meeting and reprinted

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
United Nations shuffled the
commands of its peace-
keeping and truce supervis-
ory forces in the Middle
East at ceremonies at the
Ras el Nakura crossing
point on the Israel-
Lebanese border last
weekend.
Even as the change-over
ceremonies were under
way, Dutch UNIFIL troops
intercepted and disarmed a
group of eight Palestinian
terrorists apparently mak-
ing their way toward the Is-
raeli border. They were sent
back to their base at Sidon.
If UNIFIL practice con-
tinues as in the past, their
arms will be returned.

Thousands of youths have
received their training
there.
Working with the Al-
liance Israelite Universelle
in France, Netter obtained a
600-acre estate close to
Jaffa, going to Constan-
tinople to receive the title-
deed from the Sultan.
He opened the school in
1870 and directed it person-
ally until 1873. In 1882 he
returned to Palestine,
where he died suddenly,
overcome by fever and
fatigue.
Charles Netter's work
had consequences he never
dreamed of. Mikve-Israel
was in fact to be the cor-
nerstone of the revival of
Jewish agriculture.
