Human Rights Resolve Blasted GENEVA (JTA) — The United States abstained from voting Monday on a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Commission condemning racial intolerance, terror and all forms of to- talitarianism including Nazism and apartheid. The American delegate, Richard Shifter, told the commission that his delega- tion abstained because the resolution was a "political ploy" and took insufficient notice of anti-Semitism. It was adopted by a vote of 38-0. Shifter insisted that "America is opposed to Nazism and Fascism and we do not need to prove our anti-Nazi commitment by going along with a resolu- tion which we consider mis- leading." affecting children between the ages of 3 and 15. It causes involuntary tic movements (eye blinks, fa- cial grimaces, twitches and jerks) and involuntary vocal tics (grunts, barks, hisses). Its symptoms are lifelong, and there is no cure. Sinai Hospital in New York estimates that the number of children and adults suf- fering from Tourette Syn- drome, most still not cor- rectly diagnosed, in this country ranges as high as 100,000. Some of these medications, however, are "orphan drugs" — drugs that pharmaceuti- cal companies are reluc- tant to manufacture be- cause they are not used by masses of people, and therefore they might not receive the millions of dollars required for their development and testing.
