outnumber Israel in popula-
tion, size, money, resources
and allies, the Jewish state

was the featured speaker at
a workshop on the Middle
East for Christian clergy
sponsored by the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith. Prof. Schueftan is the
Detroit Zionist Federation's
scholar-in-residence for two
weeks.
Prof. Schueftan, an Is-
raeli scholar and historian
in inter-Arab affairs,
argued that the measure of
a nation's strength is not
how much it has, but "the
ratio between the tempta-
tion to take it over and the
ability to do something
about it." And by that
yardstick, he added, "all
Arab states are inherently
unstable."
The one-day workshop,
held on Tuesday at Temple
Emanu-El, was designed for
Christian clergy. The co-
sponsors included the Ar-
chdiocese of Detroit, the
Greater Detroit Round
Table of the National Con-
ference of Christians and
Jews, the Interdenomina-
tional Ministerial Alliance,
the National Association for
the Advancement of
Colored People, Interfaith

Action Coalition, and the
Bnai Brith Hillel Founda-
tion of Wayne State Univer-
sity.
Among the issues
raised were oil blackmail
in the United Nations and
foreign affairs, the
Egyptian-Israeli peace

treaty, Arab efforts to
undermine Israeli-
American realtions, Arab
rejectionism and the
non-existence of a "mod-
erate PLO."
In an unusual role rever-
sal, Prof. Schueftan pre-
sented all the reasons why
Arabs must believe the de-
struction of the state of Is-
rael is both feasible and
necessary. Then he ex-
plained the Israeli percep-
tion that it could not work.
Introducing the program,
Elaine D. Block, vice chair-
person of the Michigan
Regional Advisory Board of
ADL, expressed ADL's hope
that this would be the be-
ginning of on-going educa-
tional efforts carried out in
the spirit of ecumenism and
honest dialogue.
