Asked whether Premier
Menahem Begin and
President Anwar Sadat
would be coming to Wash-
ington before Israel's elec-
tions on June 30, Shamir
said, "I can't say anything
about that." He said, "the
next contribution" by the
U.S. to the peace process
will be Haig's visit to the
Middle East.
Haig was questioned
about the possibility of
Jordan joining the peace
talks. He replied, "This
involves a consultative
process with the parties
concerned and is not a
made-in-America solu-
tion."
He said of the Egyptian-
Israeli autonomy talks that
"we're going to continue in
the framework of Camp
David and according to
Resolutions 242 and 338 to
reach a comprehensive set-
tlement and only after care-
ful consultations with the
parties."
Haig added, "We know
where the obstacles lay with
respect to the ongoing au-
tonomy talks with a view to
having the talks proceed
and succeed. This will be
dealt with promptly and
early on and I anticipate the
process won't be long in re-
sumption." Haig denied
that the U.S. emphasis on
the Middle East talks had
been diminished. He re-
ferred to "the strategic
realities of the Middle
East."
"These," he said, "rein-
force the peace process and
must always be kept in
mind. We must not be ex-

that in the future Israel and
the U.S. will have "many
confrontations" over that
issue.
Shamir said that if the
U.S. decided to sell the
Saudis equipment that
would improve the combat
capabilities of the Saudis'
F-15 warplanes, then Israel
feels it is entitled to in-
creased military support
from the United States, to
keep the balance of power in
the Mideast on Israel's side.
The Israeli Foreign
Minister also said that in
his talks in Washington he
raised the issue of "the ter-
rible arms race in the
Mideast." Contending that
Arab oil revenues enabled
them to purchase the most
advanced and sophisticated
weapons in the world,
Shamir said that Saudi

Libya have -together 10,000
tanks; as much as the North

have, and some 2,000
warplanes.

Illness Forces
Jewish Rep. Out
of New Congress

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Rep. Gladys Spellman (D-
Md.), who was stricken by a
massive heart attack four
days before the elections
last Nov. 4 and has been
hospitalized since then in a
semi-conscious state, will
not return to Congress.
House Speaker Thomas
O'Neill (D-Mass.) an-
nounced last Friday that he
would declare her seat vac-
ant because of her illness.
Mrs. Spellman, 63, was
overwhelmingly re-elected
to a fourth term despite her
hospitalization. She was
among the 33 Jews in the
new Congress and one of
two Jewish woman in the
House of Representatives.
Mrs. Spellman's husband,
Reuben, announced that he
would be a candidate for the
seat.

Israeli Raid
Kills 10 Arabs

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israeli army raiding party
killed about 10 Arab ter-
rorists in a strike into south
Lebanon Sunday night and
returned safely to its base.
An army spokesman said
the target was a two-storied
building in El-Kfour village
about eight miles inside
Lebanon. It had served as
the forward base for the
Iraqi-backed Arab Libera-
tion Front terrorists who
killed three Israelis and
wounded 16 persons in an
attack on Misgav Am last
April.
