WE NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD!

In four articles under the
title, "The Jewish War
Against the Jews," in the
Boston Jewish Advocate,
Dr. Neusner announced the
text of the speech he will de-
liver here on Tuesday.
The four articles ap-
peared in the Boston Jewish
Advocate on Dec. 25, Jan. 1,
8 and 15.
"The Jewish War
Against the Jews" is a
criticism of Jewish lead-
ership and the Jewish
community.
In his articles, Dr.
Neusner criticized Jewish
leadership for its inability
to accept criticism and its
stifling of dissent, and
criticized all Jews for not
knowing what is a Jew.
"The best example of this
kind of living dead is the one
who works hard without a
calling and a purpose, who
feels compelled to under-
take Jewish activity, but
who gets little from it," Dr.
Neusner wrote.,
"Examples stand ready at
hand: people who go
through the motions of da-
vening, but do not pray, fill
up the synagogues but do
not listen when the Torah is
read. Of them we know full
well.
"But what about people
who go through the motions
of giving money to Jewish
causes but do not fill up the
synagogues and do not do
those many other pleasant
and enjoyable things which
make being Jewish a source
of joy and solace in this life?
"They are, for instance,
the Jews who study about
Judaism in universities but
do not realize that the
Judaism they study also

enriches the lives of the
people who practice that
Judaism."
Dr. Neusner is blister-
ingly outspoken against
those who wish to sup-
press dissent on Jewish
issues:
"Those who would exer-
cise thought-control are
themselves ignorant and
mindless, I mean, some
Jewish federations and
other organizational lead-
ers who tell the Jewish in-
tellectuals what they
should and should not think
as Jews.
"Second, and still more
troubling (for no one in fact
pays attention to these
`Jewish leaders'), when
people wish not to argue but
to suppress, it is because
they are frightened. And I
did not realize, and I do not
think, that things are so bad
for Jewry that this state of
primitive terror should pre-
vail . . .
"In the consequent desert
of sameness and imposed
unanimity lies the death of
all emotion; all commit-
ment, all caring will perish.
The one who does the job
mechanically and
heartlessly is the walking
corpse.
"So in this war against
fresh and different ideas
are approaches to Jewry,
the Jewish leaders are
corpses who wish the liv-
ing to become like them-
selve s , also dead."
Dr. Neusner's lecture,
8:30 p.m. Tuesday, is spon-
sored by the Rabbi Morris
Adler Foundation and the
Shaarey Zedek Cultural
Commission. The lecture is
free and open to the public.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Some
400 unmarried Jewish
women between the ages of
25-35 in the Jewish com-
munity in Damascus, which
numbers a few hundred
families, are being forced to
convert to Islam to find hus-
bands, according to a
woman tourist in Switzer-
land.
Knesset member Yitshak
Yitzhaki, who met the
tourist recently, said he
planned to ask the Knesset
to take action in the matter.
According to the tourist,
who declined to be named,
the women can find no hus-
bands among the small
Jewish community in Syria
and are not allowed to leave
the country.

Journalism Chair

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
chair in journalism named
in memory of the late Dr.
Azriel Carlebach, founder
and first editor of Maariv,
was dedicated at Tel Aviv
University last week, on the
25th anniversary of his
death. The chair, whose
first incumbent is yet to be
named, will deal with re-
search into the press and its
role in society.
