TEL AVIV (JTA) — Dr.
Ricardo Subirana y Lobo
Wolf, founder of the Wolf
Fund, died Feb. 10 at age 93.
For years the founder of
the $10 million fund which
now- bears his name was
unknown, at his own re-
quest. He established the
fund in 1971 but it was only
in 1975, after suitable legis-
lation as to its manage-
' ment, that it became known
as the Wolf Prize Fund and
his identity was disclosed.
Five prizes are awarded
annually to distinguished
scientists from all over the
world for their contribution
to research and humanity.

Mr. Wolf was born in

Hanover, Germany, to a
well-known Jewish fam-
ily. He left for Cuba be-
fore World War II and in
1961 he was sent to Israel
as Cuba's first minister.
He remained in that post
until 1973 when Cuba
broke off diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel.
A personal friend of Pre-
mier Fidel Castro, Mr. Wolf
was permitted to remain in
the magnificent seashore
villa (in Herzliya) he had
built at his own expense to
house the Cuban legation.
In addition to funding the
Wolf Prize Foundation, he
also awarded about 80 full
scholarships to needy and
deserving students at Is-
raeli universities.

Joshua Urbas 5
Yiddish Author

TORONTO (JTA) —
Joshua Urbas, a Yiddish
author and one of the few
foreign authors to be pub-
lished in "Sovetish Heim-
land," the Soviet Yiddish
literary monthly, has died
at age 61.
Born in. Ostrowce near
Kielce in Poland, he escaped
to the Soviet Union during
World War II, resided
briefly in Kirghistan and
served in the Red Army. In
1946, Mr. Urbas immig-
rated to France, then went
to Israel and later settled in
Toronto where he worked as
a tailor. He was the author
of. "Der Onhoib" (The Be-
ginning), a collection of
short stories published in
1970.
Despite his links with the
Soviet Union, Mr. Urbas
was a regular worshipper at
Shaarei Shomayim, an Or-
thodox synagogue in To-
ronto.

Legion and serve in Israel
with David Ben-Gurion. He
also became a close associ-
ate of Zeev Jabotinsky.

commissioner, Mr. Gach
published his newspaper in
English and Yiddish, - then
entirely in Yiddish. It was
acquired by the Bnai Brith
Messenger in 1973.
