The Michigan candidates are competing in swimming, soccer and squash. David Linden, a 1977 par- ticipant in the squash competitions, is among the 1981 contestants. Applicants are invited to contact Mrs. Kronick in Flint, or Anne Barnett or Betsy Snyder. Miss Snyder is manag- ing the enrollments as well as supporters of the events locally in behalf of the committee headed by Ira Jaffe. She can be con- tacted at 961-8380. Acclaimed as the "Jewish Olympics," ar- rangements are being made for large delega- tions of Americans in- terested in the games to make special tours to Is- rael to witness the events. In this area, the ar- rangements are being made by Elkin Travel in cooperation with the Jewish Center. Films portraying the previous Maccabia events were shown at the meeting at the Center addressed by Mrs. Kronick. The International Mac- cabia Games Committee has announced that 34 countries, with up to 3,500 athletes, will fly their re- spective flags in the games. Egypt, which will not send a unit will, neverthe- less, fly its flag since a bas- ketball referee from Egypt will officiate. The last Egyp- tian team in the Maccabia Games was in 1935. A record-breaking 13 na- tions from South America will march in the opening ceremony which will take place in the Ramat Gan stadium before an expected 60,000 onlookers. Finland, with a total Jewish popula- tion of 800, has qualified 28 athletes for the games. Competitors will undergo medical drug tests, similar to those in force in the Olympic Games. The new tests were not used in prev- ious Maccabia Games.
