Shaarey Zedek. This year's event, in addi- tion to honoring the presidents of the Metropoli- tan Detroit Bnai Brith Men's and Women's Coun- cils, and the lodge, chapter and unit presidents, will be dedicated to the memory of Meyer Littky, who distin- guished himself over the years as an untiring worker in behalf of the JNF affores- tation program. Mr. Littky was chairman of both the Bnai Brith Israel Martyr's and Forest of Peace commit- ties. A garden of trees will be planted in the Forest of Peace to honor each of Bnai Brith Men's and Women's , no • = tics (Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.) The "Shema" is basically a verse in the Bible (Deuteronomy 6:4) which says "Hear (really meaning `Understand') 0' Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one." This is our basic dec- laration and active ec- ceptance of the faith. To this verse we add other biblical parts which make up the total recitation of the faith. These additions in- clude a portion which fol- lows the aforementioned verse in Deuteronomy (6:409) which speaks of the requirement to "love" the Almighty and to constantly be involved with His "words" of holy scripture and to employ means of al- ways keeping these words in mind. Then they include a sec- tion from another part of Deuteronomy (11:13-21) which speaks of the rewards and punishments which come from adhering to or disobeying His command- ments. Finally, they include a third portion taken from the Book of Numbers (15:37-41) which details the obligation and pur- pose of the requirement to attach fringes to one's four-cornered garment (tzitzit). Commentaries on the liturgy have distinguished three different kinds of ob- jectives that are gained from the three sections of the ."Shema." The first section is an act by which one accepts the "yoke of the kingdom of heaven." In this respect or- expresses a full measure love and devotion to the Almighty pledging to serve Him with all one's heart, soul and might. The second section is an act through which one pledges himself to adhere to all the commandments of the Almighty. The third section in- volves man in an ever- lasting "tie" to the Al- mighty symbolized by the tied fringes at the ends of his garment. Last, but not least, this section expresses our belief in the redemptive features of the Almighty's action which are the basis for our love and devotion to His hol- iness. Jewry on the Air Council Presidents, Floyd Bornstein and Evelyn Tichik, respectively. Cita- tions will be presented to all tree and tribute chairmen. Co-chairmen of the 1981 Forest of Peace Committee are Harry Michelson and Charles Fink.
