Friday February 20, 1981 37 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Multinational Sinai Force Integral to Peace: Begin JERUSALEM (JTA) — Premier Menahem Begin said here that the U.S. commitment to set up a multinational force to police the Sinai after Israel's final withdrawal was "an integ- ral part of the peace treaty." This was his reply to re- porters' questions about whether Israel would refuse to withdraw, in April 1982, •unless such a force was es- tablished in good time and Israel's satisfaction. , Begin's remarks on the Sinai peacekeeping ar- rangements were seen as significant in view of the fact that Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir was to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig in Washington this week. The premier's vague reply on the question of whether the autonomy talks situation would af- fect Israel's commitment to withdraw in April 1982 also seemed important when set against the backdrop of chief au- tonomy negotiator Yosef Burg's tough statement earlier in the week decry- ing Egyptian foot- dragging over the talks., MOVIE GUIDE BERKLEY THEATRE 2990 W. 12 Mile Rd. Israel, Burg noted, could not be expected to fulfill all of its commitments in the peace package while "other parties fulfill theirs only selectively." Asked about this, Begin said he did not recall that Burg had made this remark. NEW YORK — Arthur Green's biography of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav will be published this spring by Shocken Books. "Tor- mented Master: A Life of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav," explores the motivation behind the enigmatic author of elusive tales and mystical Hasidic stories. Green, an associate pro- fessor of religion at the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, was the winner of the first Kenneth B. Smilen Present Tense Award for Best Book of Judaica. "The fact that 800 million people in the developing world still live in poverty; that 300 million people are unfit to work because of physical problems, and that 40 percent of the world's population cannot read or write is unconscionable," Hyatt declared. "I've said it before and I will reiterate it, our greatest natural re- source is our people. We must remember that human rights are more im- portant than property right and people are more impor- tant than things!" Dr. Hyatt spoke at the NCCJ's national board of trustees meeting, at which Detroiter Alan A. May pre- sented a resolution on the political right wing in the U.S. and Moral Majority. The resolution, which was adopted without mod- ification, states that the NCCJ affirms "our com- mitment to a religiously pluralistic and culturally diverse society. We re- pudiate those who call for religious, philosophical or political exclusivity and who claim a monopoly upon virtue. We call upon all peoples to debate their problems and propose solu- tions in a spirit of mutual understanding, compas- sion, respect and brother- hood." JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Socialist International is to hold an executive meet- ing in Israel on June 12, just 18 days before the Israeli election. Political observers in Is- rael immediately inter- preted the Socialist Inter- national's scheduling of the first-ever session in Israel as a deliberate effort to help Israel's Labor Party in the election campaign. Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, JTA (Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.) A MILITARY LOOK AT JEWS: A very valuable service to the Jewish community in this country is now being rendered by the U.S. Defense Department through its Race Relations Institute which trains selected officers and servicemen as instructors to combat bigotry, anti- Semitism, and racial hatred. As part of its 16-week training program — which is given at the Patrick Air Force Base in Florida — the insti- tute has introduced a correspondence course for members of the Army Reserve and National Guard who cannot come to Florida to spend 16 weeks in residence at the Air Force base. The correspondence course provides them with mate- rial needed to relate to American Jewish culture. It has now been issued by the institute in a mimeographed form under the title "Jewish American Culture." The course aims to strengthen greater understanding for Jews in this country. The correspondence course is actually a combination of resident and correspondence study. It provides for two weeks residence at the institute at the beginning of the study, a non-resident weekend seminar, and two final weeks during which behavioral evaluations, a practicum exercise and graduation ceremonies are conducted. There are similar courses in black American culture, Hispanic American culture, Asian-Oriental culture and white American culture. The correspondence course is designed to be completed in a one-year. time frame. „ xV4 (Served Dry On Request Only) Hours: Wed.-Thurs., 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fri.-Sat. 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. SUnday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Marty John Closed Monday and Tuesday WE SPECIALIZE IN TAKE-OUT ORDERS AND CATERING FOR ALL OCCASIONS • House Parties • Office Parties Reunions • Anniversaries • Bar Mitzvas • Banquets -- • Sales Meetings _ • Stags • Wedding Receptions 00000000 ATTENTION DELI & RESTAURANT OWNERS: LEFKOFSKY & CO. 8634 FENKELL AVE. 864-4455 WHOLESALE DISTRIBUTORS OF QUALITY DELI PRODUCTS FEATURING THESE FINE BRANDS Between You . . . and Me' -* , 2aff All Ribs Are Basted 000000000000000000000000000000 Election Ploy?
