"LE DERNIERE METRO" ("The Last Metro") is France's offering for the Oscar. With "The Last Metro," Francois Truf- faut subtly delineates the nightmarish effects of the WWII occupation on the people of Paris, specifically on the French Jews who were singled out for harsh treatment and painful ridicule, later to be shipped off to concentration camps and extermination centers. The picture marks the feature debut for Andrzej Kotkowski, its director and co-author, who was born in 1940, the time of the story set during the Nazi occupa- tion. The film deals with a mock Olympic Games con- ducted by the prisoners from many lands, including French and British soldiers, in the Stalag POW camp. It is a battle of wit and a con- test of physical endurance morally won by the wretched inmates who at the end are united and ready to resist their ruth- less captors. The four JDL members are Howard Perel, 19, Rafi Medoff, 22, Shira Goldstin, 17, and Barbara Herzka, 21. Perel and-Medoff were ar- rested two weeks ago near the Soviet Mission in Man- hattan. They were accused of harassing a Soviet dip- lomat and with resisting ar- rest. Later, Becker said, the two JDL members learned they were also being charged by the FBI with as- sault. Becker said the harass- ment activities had been going on for some time" in a JDL effort to obtain the freedom of Anatoly Shcharansky, the Soviet Jewish prisoner of con- science.
