For many Jews the books have also provided knowledge about their reli- gious heritage. It is therefore fitting that the premiere of the film ver- sion of Potok's first novel, "The Chosen," on May 11 is expected to raise some $50 million for educational in- stitutions in Israel. Coming two days after Israel offi- cially celebrates the 33rd anniversary of the Jewish state, a half-million people are expected to see the film in 1,000 theaters in the United States, Canada, Is- rael, and at least 21 other countries. "It will be the largest the- ater party in the world," comedian Alan King told some 500 representatives of Jewish organizations par- ticipating in the event, called "Celebration 33" at an all-day seminar on sell- ing tickets for the premiere. All of the Jewish organiza- tions selling tickets are in- volved in some way with education in Israel and the The film, which is scheduled to open for its commercial run in the fall, may bring the world of Hasidic Jews to an even greater audience than did Potok's books. "The Cho- sen," which is about Hasidic Jews in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, may also give many Jews and non-Jews some understand- ing of Judaism itself. It has also had this effect on one of its young co-stars, Robby Benson. He said that while his parents had been active in helping Israel dur- ing its early days of state- hood, he had grown up with little Jewish knowledge. He said in making this film he had for the first time learned something about his Jewish heritage. At the same time, Benson added, he felt he now could also do something for Israel. In addition to the organ- izations in the U.S. and Canada, groups in some 30 countries are also par- ticipating in "Celebration 33." Through the coopera- tion of the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundations, some 50,000 Jewish college students will serve as ushers in all the theaters where the film is shown May 11. Tickets will sell for $100 for the world premiere. In addition, there will be a special 33-minute film, featuring such stars as George Burns, Burt Reynolds and Frank Sinatra performing Jewish works, which will be shown with The Cho- sen" at the premiere and which will never be shown again.
