Before the war, Sarajevo was the third largest Jewish community in Yugoslavia with 8,300 Jews. Only 1,000 survived the Holocaust. The group visited Dub- rovnik. In one of the side- streets of the plaza, the Jewish street, there is an old synagogue from the 14th Century. It is one of the oldest synagogues left in the Balkans. It served for hundreds of years the reli- gious needs of the big and rich community, but today no sign or writing shows what this building had been before. The group arrived in Dubrovnik two days be- fore Yom Kippur. They visited first Elimio Tolan- tino, the elderly man who manages the affairs of the small community and serves as cantor and overseer in the synagogue. He told us that it is hard to mobilize a minyan for prayers, even on Yom Kippur eve. The whole group took part in the prayers, and there was a minyan, includ- ing tourists from the U.S. and Argentina. Before the Holocaust there were 200 Jews in Dubrovnik. Today, the Tolantinos and a few other families are all that remain. The group also visited Split, a city which has existed nearly 2,000 years. During archeological exca- vations gravestones of an old Jewish cemetery were found and candle lighters with the sign of the menora on them. Jews came to Split in the beginning of the Seventh Century. In the time of the Venetian Republic Jews de- veloped commercial rela- tions between Venice and Turkey. They enjoyed the liberal and friendly rela- tions of the authorities of the Republic. Split served in the 16th Century as sanctuary for the Jews ex- pelled from Spain and Por- tugal. After the occupation of Dalmatia by the Italians in 1914 came the end for the Jewish community. The Italian fascists de- stroyed the synagogue and the Jewish archives, which contained impor- tant documents on the history of the Jews of Split. After the Nazi occupa- tion, the situation of the remaining Jews became worse. The old ones and the children were deported to concentration camps and one-third of the Jews of Split, mostly youngsters, joined the underground. Only a small fraction of the survivors came after the war to Israel. Endorsement for Early Zionism CALL YOUR TRAVEL AGENT E La 7. MA LI 7N= The only airlines flying non-stop 747's to and from Israel. Ex-Nazi Carlson Will Run Gerald R. Carlson, a white supremacist and ex- Nazi who won the Republi- can Party nomination for Congress in Michigan's 15th District last August but was defeated in Novem- ber, has filed to run again. This time Carlson is seek- ing the 4th District seat previously held by David Stockman, now director of the Office of Management and Budget for the Reagan Administration. Carlson won the 15th Dis- trict Republican nomina- tion last summer in a heav- ily Democratic district. Embarrassed Republican officials attribute his 33 percent showing in the No- vember election to the Re- agan landslide- victory. Carlson faces strong opposition in the March 24 Republican primary race in the 4th District. His Republican oppo- nents include two state legislators. Carlson said he will run on a "white rights" platform and stress urban decay.
